Digital Camera for around $450-$500

Hi guys im looking at buying a digital camera around the $450 - $500 mark. Should I go for a SLR type camera? Also my dad has an old Minolta 7000 film camera, and he has heaps of lenses for it, would any of these lenses fit any of the newer digital cameras, i doubt it but worth asking.

I don't think you can actually get an actual digital SLR for $4-500... maybe a "prosumer" slr-styled camera.

Yeah that what I was looking at an 'slr' style camera, maybe something like the fujifilm s5500, is there a better camera than this in the same sort of range?
