View Full Version : Brief Picture Stutter

Hi All,
I have this extremely annoying problem, it happens on a DGTEC STB and a PC
with an Ultraview DVB-T card.
I have high signal strength in the 90%'s and I have no problem with the
analogue signal yet on digital TV intermittantly I get picture and audio
stuttering it lasts less than a second.
It sometimes works fine for a day but most of the time I'll get stuttering
anything from a couple of times a minute to once every couple of minutes.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
TIA
Richard

Sounds like electrical impulse noise. Does it coincide with lights being
turned on or off, or the fridge kicking in out out, the dishwasher, washing
machine, etc? If that's it you may need to replace your antenna coax with
higher quality (quad shield), and by ensuring it is installed away from
mains wiring.

How big a problem is impulse noise in Australia today? How many people
are affected and is it mostly in low signal areas, on low VHF channels,
is it mainly a problem with bad coax or are certain receivers more
problematic?
Is it a major problem, minor problem that can be fixed?

Air conditioners switching on or off also affect it. Especially the larger
3-phase types.

Depends on the cause, I guess. Apparently it can be caused by arcing street
lights and stuff as well.
If it's internal (coax quality, location etc) then upgrading the cable can
make a huge difference or eliminate the problem completely.

The real situation is that that is a pig ignorant drivel.

Thank you I will pass that on. One thing though, I thought pigs were

Not about DTV, silly.

| This is some of the drivel going as facts on OZ in the US. This from
a
| Tim Keating on alt.tv.tech.hdtv
| Notice how he dismisses the extensive testing done in Australia of
COFDM
| and 8-VSB as "fantasies".
|
|
| "No booby... We can't use the System deployed on Oz land...
| They use 7 Mhz channels.. We in the US use 6Mhz channels..
|
| Any so called test reports from Oz land are non-operational
| fantasies cooked up using some controlled testing..
|
| It still doesn't change the fact that COFDM couldn't/didn't even
| fit(5.7Mhz) properly in a 6Mhz channel without bleeding significant
| energy into adjacent NTSC channels. Note: ATSC/8VSB only uses
5.3Mhz of
| the 6Mhz channel.
|
| And you still haven't address impulse noise issues, which seam to
| plague the poor viewers down in Oz land. From what I hear true
HDTV
| broadcasting (720p or better) is in really a sad state down in the
land
| of Oz. All that testing and very little to show for it.
|
| I suggest you reread the FAQ by the australia broadcasts
association..
|
| http://www.dba.org.au/newsletter/troubleshooting.asp
| "Picture regularly breaks up"
|
| " Interference from impulse noise may be causing pictures to break
up
| and audio to drop out momentarily"
|
| "Check for domestic sources of impulse noise (eg, the use of light
| switches, fridges, hair dryers, air conditioners etc.)."
|
| "If present, arrange for all cables, connectors, outlets and
splitters
| between the antenna and the receiver to be upgraded in accordance
with
| antenna installation guidelines."
|
| "DBA strongly recommends the use of quad shielded coaxial cable and
F
| connectors at all times.""
|
| Ignorance abounds. Anyway I would like to get the facts on actual
| impulse noise impact in Australia.
|
| Bob Miller
The impulse noise reported by some people is apparently very dependent
on their appliances and wiring. I live in a 40-year old home unit and
don't have any problem with impulse noise.
I am also in a good signal area and don't use quad shielded cable or F
connectors (at least I don't think it is quad shielded cable, it's the
same old stuff I have been using for analog TV for decades and nothing
has been done to the cable or aerial since I started using digital
over three and a half years years ago). The signal is actually split
into two, then one of those splits is split into two again before
going into one of my digital receivers and no amplification is used.

I have a DViCO Fusion DVB-T on a Pentium4 2.4Ghz with NViDia GEForce4 MX 400
graphics and I do experience intermittent stuttering when the processor is
loaded doing other tasks, esp. copying big TV files between hard drives,
then everything stutters, not just the TV, Could it be processor loading. ?

Unlikely, I run 3 DNTV LIve cards, soon to be 4, in a Celeron 900MHz and
dont have any problem like that even when burning DVDs at the same time.
And I normally burn them over the lan with the burner on that PVR PC too.
