What's the maximum data speed on 1X CDMA? I just wondered whether
technically, it would be a good alternative to ISDN in areas which can't
get ADSL. I know the cost would be prohibitively expensive.

The theoretical max downstream speed of CDMA 1x is 153kbps.
In reality you get around the 80k mark.
It would be a reasonable alternative to ISDN, but not great.
It's great if you're mobile, but if what you really want is ADSL then 1x
is not quite going to cut it as a fixed wireless alternative (assuming
you can get ISDN).
If you are not too far from a base station that is enabled for CDMA
1xEVDO then you could have a viable alternative - you'd be surprised the
range you can get with an external antenna (esp a high gain Yagi). Then
the theoretical max is 2.4Mbps, and real speeds of ~500kbps are readily
achieved.

Until telstra drop their evdo pricing and stupid 15 minute mandatory billing
sessions, it aint going to take off in a hurry

There's nothing "MANDATORY" about it, you can stay connected for 1 minute if
you choose. You just choose to pay for the 15 minute
The worlds moved on. Even most voice call pricing is back to 30s blocks
