Whining diff is common fault
By Graham Smith

Q
We bought a VY automatic V8 Holden Crewman last year and have covered
10,000km. During this time we have had the rear axle replaced three times
due to diff whine at various speeds up to 100km/h. Have you heard of similar
problems, and can we expect a long-term solution?
Robert Splatt, email.
A
Yours is quite a well known problem related to the rear axle in the Crewman
ute and One-tonner. My understanding is that there is no guaranteed fix. The
action usually taken is what you have experienced, and the rear axle is
switched for another one, sometimes with success, sometimes not. If you
haven't heard the noise with the latest axle, it's unlikely to develop
again.

Magna's have a whine as well. Luckily for Mitsubishi, it comes from the
drivers, not the car.
