My son has just started to learn how to drive and within his first coupla
lessons he met up with a real life fuckwit in a 2005 Merc, unknown model,
who was trying to do a 3-point turn in the E-way lane at the M4 tollgates,
Sydney!! Yes, said fuckwit did not have an E-tag and seemed to think that
everybody should stop and let him do the 3-pointer so that he could get
into the manned tollgates.!!
So, here we were doing 80kph in the lefthand lane and coming around what is,
essentially a blind corner and being presented with this fuckwit about 40
metres ahead in the leftlane!
I was shitting myself and was lost for choices for a sec - should I tell my
son to slowdown to a stop (but what about the traffic following us)? Should
I tell him to move into the right lane (but what about the traffic in that
lane)? Would my son panic if I try to give him too many instructions
(slowdown, hit the brakes, keep to his lane, check his mirrors for
following traffic??) Well, I was literally paralysed for that split sec
which was crucial for decision making with a learner driver :(
Of cos, my son had already decided to slowdown with his brakes and push his
way into the right lane (I am not sure if he used his righthand indicators
- I think he didn't and he said he didn't remember). Fortunately the cars
in the right hand lane had seen the fuckwit doing the 3-pointer and my son
pushing his way into the right lane and were kind enuff to let him into the
lane. We managed to to miss the dickhead with about 5 metres to spare.
I later commended my son for his fast thinking actions and he casually said
that he was quite used to doing the same thing in GTA!! :) He wasn't quite
sure why Dad looked a bit pale. :)

Blind corner?! While I don't travel through those gates all that often
anymore, if someone were to do a 3 point turn (wot a wanker) at the
E-Way gates, I'd suspect I'd have a chance to come to a stop, make it
back to 80 and come to a stop again.

Rod.

Lesson 1 - Always drive at a speed such that you can stop within the visable
distance in front of you.

Well, I am exaggerating :) cos it probably wasn't that blind a corner, but
the bend in the road just as the road barriers start made it very difficult
to see. We actually drove by there again today just to check out how close
we came to having a prang.

I'm assuming East bound? Considering there's plenty of signs coming up
on the side of the road and in the lane, anyone dumb enough to continue
to travel up it, have to stop and do a 3 pointer should be fined out of
principle.
There's normally 1 person milling around that area when I used to go
through it daily. They should take down licence plates and issue fines.
I travel the M5 mainly now, and if someone were to do that it would
definitely end in disaster.
Cheers,
Rod.

your son has shown some good skills here but to advance to Expert
level he would have recognised the rare opportunity to t-bone a late
model mercedes in the blissful knowledge there wasn't a damned thing
anyone could have done about it except pay you out for the damages.
you'd have walked it in in court.
i'm not advocating unsafe driving here, 'managing' to brake to a speed
at which injury wouldn't have resulted would have done the trick ;)

of course if the bleeding imbociles went through the Etoll gate, got the
flash and then called the toll companies number and tell them they could
then just pay the toll at a later date
fuckwits are always doing the same on the Gateway, for over 500metres
there are big yellow "ETOLL ONLY" signs above the road and painted on
the roadway yet they still manage to drive on in then stop and want
everyone behind to stop and let them back up, or if they do go through
the then want to stop on the exit and run over to the booth in the next
lane to pay money

Nar, just make sure you're pointing straight and lock 'em up. My starlet
takes a fair bit longer to stop on lockup than it does 'hard' braking, esp.
from high speeds.
Wouldn't work in the forester though, can stop from higher speeds in less
road. It is very twitchy on the ABS though, give it the slightest rain or
dirt on the road, and it'll activate without fail under anything more than
light-medium braking.
Probly why I prefer cars without all the "helping" shit... If you can't
catch an RWD car using opposite lock, say you've hit oil halfway round a
corner, you probably shouldn't be driving. Forget the electronics, always a
chance they'll fail.

Doesn't that indicate that the current system is confusing to it's users?

My understanding is that you can park your car sideways in the middle of a
freeway and if someone hits you then it's their fault and they will pay you
out. You might get a fine (if you didn't have a valid reason like breakdown)
but because you were stationary and the other driver failed to stop in time
it is their problem, not yours.
