i need help i cant seem to find a decent, reliable program to convert my avi files to dvd format and another thing which isnt as important is i was wondering if it was possible to convert avi straight to a dvd disc using clone dvd\dvd shrink without having to convert it to dvd format first:confused:

I uses WinAvi to convert and then nero to burn to dvd. You would need to install Divx codec as well.

I have only recently found Winavi myself after trying many other programs and Winavi is by far the best I have found. Once it finishes converting you can even click burn and it autostarts nero for you.

If you find a program that does it on the fly and does it well, please be sure to post back as I would love to know about it.

i always thought that it was possible to burn avi to disc (although ive never found a program that does it) but you just need a dvd that supports avi

Nero Vision Express also does a reasonable job of converting.
If you have a DVD player that supports avi files (like xvid and divx), then you just need to burn the file direct to disc, without converting first.
Plenty of players out now, just look at the threads in here.

The same way you burn normal files to disc.
Start Nero, open as a data disc, ISO9660 format, drag file to disc, burn.
Pop disc in player, select file, hit play. (Note that your player must support mpeg4 format)

If you use DVD-R, I would choose UDF or UDF/ISO format.

UDF will allow you to put files that are individually larger than 2G on a disc, however a lot of standalone mpeg4 players do not officially support UDF.
Sometimes they will not playback at all, and sometimes they will playback the files, but have other problems (such as not loading subtitle files, or having trouble with Fast Forward or Rewind).
Using ISO9660 does not stop you putting more than 2G on a disc, it just does not allow you to have a single file larger than 2G.
i.e. you can have multiple files taking up the entire disc.

so what your saying is i should use ISO9660 opposed to UDF/ISO???

I use ISO9660, just to mantain compatability.
