Hi All,

Does anyone know the video format of files copied from a Legend Dual
Tuner PVR (via the slow USB port). They are created with the file
extension .HTA (I think? knew I should have written it down...)

Are these MPEG2 files with a custom header?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Fred

How about clipping the start of a sample (say 1MB?), post it on
the 'net and put the URL here.

It's .HAV, the only decoder I found that would do it is DV-Studio but it's
not freeware so I didn't even try, and it can't do it directly.

Try this link:
http://www.haenlein-software.de/haenlein-software/index2.php?navigation=dvr-studio&unav=nav_progs&sprache=english

There are two viewers, Imagen and Moyager.

I figure if I needed to save anything I would use my capture card. It would
probably be no slower than the 1.1 USB. I have the LPVR-C version of the
player. Excellent value and performance.

Have you tried attacking it with ProjectX (similar to the way we generally
deal with demuxing Topfield files, and also even DVB-T tuner card
recordings)?

So what does that mean? Many windoze app'd just look at the filename
extension, not the content. Are you sure its not just an mpeg stream
with custom header as the OP suggests? It wouldn't hurt to look at a
hex dump.

Havn't tried it yet but MPlayer (it is freeware) should play it directly.

Thanks Tony, I've checked your pages out previously and have downloaded
ProjectX to check things out. It'll probably be a while before I actually
upload anything so I'll keep checking around for more details or anyone who
has tried it with .HAV files.

HTA ?? transport stream?
if it is an mpeg2 try this if nothing else works.
you may have to rename file extensions.

A couple of programs worth trying for the sake of it are
Mmv2Mpg.exe command prompt executable that converts
Sonys Micromv Transport Stream (TS)Mpeg2 to Program stream(PS)
this then allows most authoring programs to work.

http://www.videohelp.com/tools?toolsearch=mmv2mpg
.

=====
mmv2mpg.exe
Description: This is a small utility to convert Sony MicroMV (mmv) format
into a more standard mpg format.
It won't change the bitrate or do anything else,
but the mpg format is more widely used in editing software.mmv2mpg.exe

Also if it is possible the recording is in an mp4 format try
MP4Cam2AVI_v2.22.zip
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mp4cam2avi/
http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=MP4Cam2AVI
MP4Cam2AVI supports *.MP4, *.MOV and *.AVI clips from most MPEG-4 camcorders,
it makes them DivX/XviD-compatible and readable with DVD-MPEG4 players.

i have no experience with pvr's except that a friend has one and i have messed around with DVB streams, nokia9600s and humax5400.
Just a different idea that may be worth trying, or not!

Thanks to all those that have replied.

It seems that the Legend PVR produces .HVA files not .HAV, and this is
not just a cosmetic difference - all the named .HAV software
(DVR-Studio Pro, Imagen, Moyager, ProjectX) couldn't read the files.
mplayer played the files successfully, but there was a lot of glitches
as it player (I think my initial thoughs on MPEG2 were correct, its
looks like an MPEG2 Transport Stream). I'm still trying to figure if
these playback problems are because mplayers' settings need to be
adjusted/tuned, or if it didn't upload the file properly to my PC
(seems unlikely, but the Legend PVR USB port wasn't really designed for
file uploads, so you never know)

The legend PVR is excellent in price and performance, so it would be
disappointing if I can't extract movies from the box. I've tried
getting advice from Legend support several times, and haven't got a
reply.

Does any else own and upload movies from a Legend PVR?

OK, I can get HAV files off a Legend LPVR250 and change them to MPG with DVR-Studio.

1. Legend LPVR's create HAV files.
2. DVR Studio pro can convert Legend LPVR HAV files to MPG files which can then be manipulated with whatever transcoder comes packaged with your MP4 player.
3. Imagen and Moyager do not play LPVR HAV files (they play the other type of HAV files).
4. I haven't tried Project X and don't intend to as the above works and I have little to no spare time.

If anyone has actually tried Project X on LPVR HAV files I'd be interested to hear the results.

How convert HAV to MPEG?
=======================
1. Upload HAV file to a PC.
2. Start DVR-Studio
3. File > Open > Point To your HAV file
4. Click "Create MPEG File" button on right side
5. Click OK in dialog box that opens.
6. Take a short nap or a long walk and your MPEG is ready to watch or transcode to the obscure format your MP4 player demands. (takes about 10 minutes for a 30 minute program on my old machine). It's that easy.

DVR Studio can also queue up a heap of recordings and batch process them overnight. Do not bother with DVR-Studio Pro as the only difference is it's support for directly transferring files from some PVRS (LPVRs are not supported so its no use to me). DVR-Studio is not free but you can't always get a free lunch.

The above is not guesswork or what I think might work, it works for me every day.

Any questions?
