Sydney gets new FTA channel
Wednesday, August 10 2005, 07:43 BST -- by Neil Wilkes
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds23332.html
A new free-to-air terrestrial station serving viewers in Sydney, Australia
is to launch in November.
The channel, 'TVS', plans to feature programmes made "for and about Sydney"
by locally-based producers and is also appealing for people and
organisations to come forward with show ideas.
"Our aim is to provide a platform for new program formats and for program
providers with fresh and exciting ideas", said Laurie Patton, acting chief
executive at TVS. "We see TVS as an 'incubator' where creative producers can
afford to experiment with new concepts and develop new talent".
He added: "Inevitably some of our more successful initiatives will find
their way onto the screens of the major networks, but that's OK by us."
The not-for-profit venture will broadcast 24/7 and is permitted to sell up
to eight hours per day of airtime.

It means Channel 31 will finally be back. Probably not on digital tho.

Sorry, but I think you both missed the point of my question.
There was a statement in the promo that they can sell up to 8 hours per day
of airtime.

Ahh, sorry - this is the same as the old Channel 31 being allowed to sell a
not insignificant chunk of airtime to PrimeLife for "Rennaisance TV"
programming.
I kinda hope TVS doesn't do that!

yes but i think now "8 hours per day" has the additional condition of no
longer than 2 consecutive hours in any one block - so they could have up to
4 x 2 hour blocks during the day, just not 8 hours all in one hit which is
what Renaissance had. Renaissance is gone now anyway.

Thanks for the explanation.

Cool. I wouldn't know because Syd hasn't had community TV for well over a
year now. I hope that the new channel is going to be a lot slicker
technically than its (amateurish) predecessor, and not sell out to
commercial enterprise like they did.

There is already plenty of christian TV multichannelling on digital
channel 44 - they don't need another channel :)
