I have an elderly relative in Launceston who needs a STB for reception
purposes but doesn't want to change her TV (aerial input and UHF tuning for
external signal) - "It's a lovely piece of furniture and xxx bought it
before he died". Is there any way a STB can be connected to such an old
clunker?

Also any recommendations for a STB where the controls are
little-old-lady-friendly.

I suppose you could attach a video recorder via the RF and run the STB into
the video.

Some STBs incorporate RF output although I could not tell you which brands/models do this. You will need to check the specs before purchase.

Yes, you can use a modulator or an STB which has one.

Hardly little old lady friendly.

I use a 1970's smaller TV here (a Thorn colour) with similar issues.
Perhaps you could check to see if you can't use a matching transformer
(to provide a normal RF socket for VHF) then get hold of a AV adaptor
(and power supply for it) from Jaycar et al.
Such a setup works here just fine; I use my PS2, DVD player etc. with
such a setup here and have no issues. It would work fine for a STB.
If you need more details just ask and I'll find part numbers etc. for
you.
It would be monoaural unless you pipe the audio elsewhere (e.g. a
nearby sound system), which would become feasible given it will now
have AV connectors. I use a small adaptor here and a couple of PC
speakers for stereo sound, but some good speakers suitably hidden would
be ideal - she'd think she has a new TV or something :)
I don't use my TV out of sentimentality - it makes for a fine TV with
AV connectors actually! - Don't discourage her from keeping the old
tube as they are great collectors items and do look pretty good as far
as furniture goes.
I know you can buy replacement remotes for some STB's, but you might
want to give some STB manufacturers a ring if you're looking for a
little-old-lady friendly remote.

The $79 STB from Bi-Lo has an RF modulator which works like a VCR eg top
knob to VHF, bottom to ch 36

Hey, I'm sitting here in the study watching the cricket on a Thorn Colour!
Mines about 34cm, bought it at DJs in Sydney in about 1981. Has travelled
to many houses with me and through quite a few renovations without ever,
ever giving me a problem. Picture looks a bit fuzzy but I don't know if
that's age or if maybe it was always like that.

The Panasonic TU-CT20A has an RF outut, so you just tune your TV to an
assigned channel to pick up the STB signal. This will work with any TV that
has UHF tuning.

However, I think this model is about to be superceded and don't know if the
new Pana has the same feature.

Mine is about 34 cm too, but it doesn't have fuzzy issues :)
I supposed 1970's but I could accept it might be an early 1980's TV -
dunno how long the production run of this model was though. Not much
info on the TV itself..

Thank you all. I will look for a box with an RF output.

The Unimax ST-102 has RF out, and is around $90 from Strathfield Car Radios.
