Well, I bought one at last....
I think LG DR7922W is an excellent DVD Recorder for the first time buyer on a budget of say $300. This recorder has an analog TV tuner (not Digital, no hard disk) and can record to DVD+/-R/ DVD+/-RW and Dual Layer DVD+R disks! Further specs are pasted at the bottom.
My thoughts, logic etc:
Living in Australia, sometimes the latest models have to waited for patiently! Frankly, I've been waiting for this sort of DVD recorder with a digital/STB tuner. Will one appear before Xmas 2005??
Anyway, it will serve my needs until 2008, maybe later if the government extends analog TV transmission further.
I've just bought the LG DR7922W having looked for/at similar models by Telefunken/Akai (TRW1018) and Liteon (LVW-5005, LVW-5006, LVW-5020) and some of the big brand names like Sony or Toshiba.
Initially, I am VERY happy with it using the LQ/4HR mode mainly. It's a keeper! (Perhaps, this is because my wife says it's fantastic!...)
The LG DR7922W is easy to setup and use by itself connected to a TV.
The design is slim (W430xD300xH49mm), neat and sensible, with clear manual and remote.
However, I also own a LG DVD/VCR combo and so (after some manual reading and RCA cabling adventures) I got all this "stuff" connected to the TV, HiFi blah blah a couple of hours later - fairly neatly.
The LG "remote control clash/overlap" is a bit irritating, but I was expecting this, but I've seen worse things with two different VCRs.
The extra Dual Layer DVD+R support and breakthrough price beats many of the brand name DVD recorders - I expect slash/clearance discounts will occur followed "new" models within weeks.
If you are interested in music (vinyl/music-cassette transfers) then the Liteon LVW-5006 is well worth checking out instead. No DVD+RDL recording though.
The Telefunken can record DVD+R/RW only, but can playback DVD±R/±RW.
Cheers

i purchased one for my dad yesterday for his birthday, "multi-format" does that mean it won't need a region hack? Some combinations with the remote?

From memory open the tray and press 0 on the remote 7 times, should set it to all zone

Which region set menu are you referring to?

RE: LG DR7922W DVD Recorder
Here's a "cold light day" follow-up posting!
Hack DivX tips at bottom of post.
Alas, I had to exchange my DR7922W due minor fault in 'remote control unit'
the vendor made me to return the whole kit. It was ridiculous, having to pull apart my set-up just to change it! Just one bad RCU in a million...
I'm not as quite impressed by the results produced by LQ-mode of replacement unit. (Time will tell if LQ is useful at all).
The HQ and SQ are acceptable - thus it's good for 1hr or 2hr recording.
The ability to use DVD+R DL media SQ/4hr makes it viable for longer films 130min+ and sport ~like the AFL Grand Final needs 150min dude :) .
The USA version of unit come with 8-2 memory card reader in-built (and suppose I'll spot one next week somewhere)
It's been a good value purchase. There will even better models by Xmas, but I'm happy with the analog tunered LG DR7922W for the next 3 years -then it's gotta be all digital TV of course.
Cheers Goshy
I know folk who have spent $1200+ on a DVD recorder and are NOT as pleased as me....
-----------------------
LG seem to be really into DivX!! For example, the LG V8824W has been superceded by a unit that supports DivX and most of their newer models do DivX.
LG DR7922W DivX?? It's covered on page 33 of the manual
All tech-gook to me! In short;
- no GMC support,
- res. max is 720x576 pixels
- plays .avi .divx / codec DIV3 4 5 xvid 3IVX
- mp3 32 - 320kbps
Drifting around the web I found these hacks worked
-----------------------
Region Free LG DR7922W DVD Recorder
1) Eject the tray
2) Press '0' seven times
3) Select Yes/OK when presented with "Congratulations, Region free?
----------------------
Region Free LG V8824W DVD/VCR Combo
Remove any disk turn on DVD
Press PAUSE
Enter 314159
The hidden region code menu will appear
Set code to '0' for region free
Press PAUSE

Hi Goshy,
I have bought one of the DR 7922 recorders, and I am generally happy with the quality of the recordings it makes. I can't, however, make the 'Disc Label' feature (page 27 of the manual) or the 'Title Name' feature (page 48 of the manual) work. Have you tried them, please? I have read the book several times with no success and I'm wondering if I have a crook unit or is it 'operator error'?

how far into the menu's can you get?
i bought the rh 7521w on saturday ( same software from what i can see , exept mine has the 80gig hdd )
what discs are using? -r or -rw?
does the 7922 have auto initialise?
i have to re format the -rw discs into video mode after i put it in as it automatically sets up in vr mode and i cant play it on other players.

Hi Byrons mate,
I can gett all the way into the menus, but once the disc label or title name is established it either disappears completely after finalisation or diplays without functioning fully after finalisation. First experience was with tdk -r as i was wanting to keep a permanent record of home videos. I have since tried lg -rw (as supplied with the unit) and while the results were a little better (mind you I was recording fta off air, not video via the ieee 1394 input) the disc label still does not function as I beleive it should from my reading of the manual. When a -rw is installed, the unit gives you the option of initialising in either vr or video. If I initialise in video mode, it will replay on my Samsung as well.

i plan on doing some copying tonight of digital tv from the hd tonight .
i will try on 3 different media types and report back tomorrow
(2 different types of -r and 1 type of -rw)
does yours have any trouble viewing jpegs?
some of mine dont show up
and the divx playback isnt as complete as i would have thought from an lg unit, although what does play , plays seamlessly with really good pic quality with minimal blocky bits during fast sequences.

Hi Byrons mate,
I must confess that I haven't tried to use the jpeg or divx features as yet, I've become fixated on the disc label and title name issues (my wife says I'm obsessed, but what would she know afetr 30 years).
Have you tried any of these features yet?

your wife must be related to mine ( i think they are all related somewhere)
but thats a whole new thread that i dont want to go down
i can rename titles on the hdd and copy to disc.i will try disc title tonight and tell you tomorrow.
when i put the finalised disc in a player it has a generic name for the disc but the title for the show is ok.
so that works.
i havent tried copying direct to disc as i edit on the hd
will try for you tonight -
disc title with direct to disc copy
disc title with hdd copy

leggy,
last night i copied from hd to disc on 2 x different -r and copied from fta (stb) to -rw and had no problems.
i changed the title name on the hd before copying , but it was re named 'title 1' on the disc , which is a pain.
i put 2 titles on the discs and the last thing i did before finalisation was rename the disc and both titles (and press ok to get out of the text area) and then finalise. works well on my other players ok as the re named titles.
so i guess unless you had more luck last night it could be your player.
there is a thread here somewhere i think talking about tdk media , have a look.
i used princo 4x -r and a no name -r ($15 for 50) and the lg -rw
good luck

i forgot i have another question for anyone reading
the lg has a 6hr copy limit for the hd.
i want to copy the bathurst race on sunday , can i set timer record to 2 x 6hr sessions that overlap to overcome this problem?
or do i have to have a 15 min break in the middle to sort it out?
(no doubt something good will be missed)

Thanks Danny,
Did you actually use the 'Disc Label' function, or just 'Title Name'? Also, are you able to read the entire 'Title Name' (all 32 characters) or just the little bit that is visible on the 'Title List' screen? If you did use the 'Disc Label' function, how is the 'Disc Label' displayed, please?
Further to my original information, the salesman @TGG now says that he has been told that other DR7922s are surfacing with the same problems, so perhaps a software problem.
Thanks again for your time and effort.
Rob.

Hi Leggy et al,
The HAPPY bit:
Sorry, I've bailed out of this thread into silence, but it's just that my (2nd) LG DR7922 works just fine as far as can see.
I will recommend the version with the 8-2 memory card to family & friends IF it appears before Xmas in Aussie shops.
'Disc Label' function, 'Title Name' fine on my box.
LQ-mode recording is okay for modern drama, lousy for sport or anything with a lot of detail or like grass or flock wallpaper. Good reception only gets you so far. Turn anything that causes mild/wavy interference (like the neighbour's power drill or sander....)
Having fun with it skipping the adverts a dream come true.
Decent sound recording on video (no hiss).
I'm finding it hard to keep old VHS powered up.
I can make dupe copies (with Nero in my case) on the PC
DVD-R to DVD-R
DVD+R to DVD+R
DVD-RW to DVD-RW
DVD+RW to DVD+RW
I expect DVD+RW to DVD+R (etc -) to work hopefully when I try it.
While I may appear to be an "expert".
I'm not really - I can just digest manuals quite well, and discard info not relevant to my me very easily.
Alas, the SAD bit:
I feel sorry for the vendors if the device has "quality of manufacture" problems, but really frankly that's the business game.
If it doesn't work quite right; refund money, swap it or repair it.
I'm a big fan of getting the money back ideally. Forget about repairs in the first month "insist" on refund or swap.
(no-body bothers to fix anything any more)
Don't be afraid to phone up LG Australia, they care about their customers which is why they stick "3yr warranty" on nearly everything....
...unlike some "pointed" makers known for their microwaves
Cheers (off to other things....)
Goshy

Wow what a huge amount of information for a recently released unit.
My VHS died tonight (thank the gods) and I have to get a replacement quick smart. I did my research on the web tonight and came up with the Wintal X-20 as being the best option (even if the remote is crappy). I went to the Wintal website and saw a much better player the X-30 is soon to be released with the great feature of USB playback of any flash media through the unit. What great idea... anyway I cant get that this week so I was stuck with the X-20, then I saw the light...forget the gimmicks (even if they are pretty cool) dual layer media recording is the best way to go and so I have my heart set on the LG, but (and finally I get to my point) I have a question about the SP record mode.
In EQ mode (6 hours) is the quality upto that of LP VHS?
Also in VR mode do I understand correctly that this can only be played on VR compatible units? If so what modes are available for me to record to so that I can give the dvd to someone to view on their own stand alone player?
(I need to record a Foxtel soap for my sister every week which is 5 hours long each week and fitted nicely using LP on a video)
