View Full Version : What effect does a loose timing chain have?

Hi all,
I've just replaced the cam and timing chain in my blue 253 and I
noticed that the stock (original) chain was so strectched and loose
that it could be removed without pulling the sprockets off.
What sort of effect does this have?
Thanks,
Brett M.

It loosens all the money from your pocket when it jumps a tooth or two at
high revs.

It retards the cam timing, and can do considerable damage to the engine if
the chain comes off when it's running.

on an engine that is tuned properly this will affect the efficiency,
power, smooth running.
on a 253 it should be ok tho.

the timing will be all over the place(as seen using a timing light)and
hard to get right
this results in a rough idle
slow timing advance on acceleration meaning poor performance
so did you replace it with some nice "Pete Jackson" straight cut timing
gears?
