Govt chips in $10million to help em out.
Holden job cuts 'to protect future' (guess they've had a look at the
380)
August 26, 2005
CAR maker GM Holden was trying to protect the company's future in
Australia by cutting 1400 jobs at its Adelaide vehicle assembly
operations by mid-2006, the company said today.
It said the decision was in response to global business conditions,
increasing competition from imported vehicles and changes to sales
projections.
The chairman and managing director, Denny Mooney, said the decision
was difficult, but the right one to ensure Holden's long term future.
"We need to act because the local market and exports are changing," Mr
Mooney said.
"We are oversize for what we need in coming years and we have to
protect our future in Australia."
Holden's decision will involve the company axing the third shift it
established at the Elizabeth factory in 2003 by the end of this year.

That would cut 1000 jobs and a further 400 would be lost by the middle
of next year.
Mr Mooney said it was hoped the company could find enough employees
willing to accept voluntary separation packages to achieve the work
force reductions.
The job cuts would reduce the size of the Holden workforce at
Elizabeth to about 4300.

Sumthin like that.
"Hah, with that ugly POS people will expect a wait for a new car due to
demand! We don't need all these workers, just make Joe Blo wait an extra few
weeks!"

Fuckwit following orders, in fact.
Be positively awful if GM USA shunts off hundreds of thousands of pleb
workers and GM Au doesn't.
It's about face.
And stock prices,
And politicing with official bleats about the 'high' Au$.
As usual.

They're laying off the third shift. I'd hardly call that "the skids" :)
The more important point is that if sales of larger cars are affecting
Holden, who make the number one selling family sedan in the country, then
other manufacturers like Ford & Mitsubishi will be in for similar treatment.
Mitsubishi could find themselves folding altogether.

Noddy, Mitsu once ran 3 shifts, then 2, then 1, then slow 1.

Fords already in trouble...Mitsu will at least have an excellent,
brand new vehicle.

That's strange. I thought Holden would need extra shifts to build all those
adventras, crewman, monaros not to mention SS Commodores that Australians
just love? Or could it be they are just not selling because they are poorly
made overpriced shitboxes? Sounds to me like they've just shit in their own
nest. The rot will surely set in once they announce the new barina, aka
Daewoo Lanos and Vectra aka Daewoo Leganza!

bingo. if fuel prices stay or rise then a 175 kW v6 is not a
market-conquering car.
australia has long protected its own car industry, similar to the
yanks, via cheap fuel prices (read: low excise).
but international market forces are overtaking that and fuel is rising
on its own, and this will force both aussie and yank manufacturers to
compete against the range of 4 cyl. car makers, including the koreans.
they can't win that battle. partly because at the moment holden are
buying their 4 cyls. off korea.
the writing is on the wall. GM and ford are now junk bonds on wall st.
fleet buyers will start walking away from v6 large cars if fuel prices
keep going up.
have you driven the latest kia rio? it's not that bad.

Lucky for Ford that theirs isn't a V6 then, huh?
Now they just have to fix the power deficit of the LPG model.
Time for Ford to build a dedicated LPG turbo engine for the Falcon,
preferably with LPG injection.

No, I haven't, but what I've seen of Kia's recently doesn't impress me very
much.
Hyundai is far and away the best of the Korean manufacturers, and their
current crop of stuff are excellent value for money. The new V6 thing (is it
the Sonata?) looks like an outstanding buy for the dosh.

Mate of mine just stopped for a tea and biscuit , his brand new v6
courier is in atm getting the first lpg conversion he knows of which he
expects to yield excellent results as its being tuned totally for gas
and will be losing a lot of spare parts .
