View Full Version : Odd clutch problem

Hi folks,
My old Corolla's clutch slave cylinder seems to have a
slight air leak, and about twice a year I have to get the
air bled from it to restore the system's full travel.
But lately it's been doing something else. The pedal
often feels quite soft when I haven't pressed it for a while,
and I have to pump it a couple of times to get the clutch
working properly again; the pedal then feels fine.
It's been doing this for about two weeks, and not getting any
worse, as far as I can tell. Today I took it around to my
usual clutch bloke, who checked for obvious leaks, low fluid
etc, but couldn't shed any light on it. I couldn't demonstrate it,
of course, because I'd just been using the clutch :-)
Do any of you gurus have any ideas? It's still quite
driveable, but a bit worrying.

The clutch hydraulics are rooted.
Most likely the master cylinder is leaking internally. You should
rebuild or replace both master and slave.

The slave cylinder and/or master cylinder needs to be repaired or replaced.

Just need new seals in both m'cylinder and slave, more than
likely, then you won't have to pay regular visits your unusual
clutch bloke, unless you really like him but that's your business
and we won't go into that here.

A mate's Centura had a clutch slave cylinder which had a seal so rooted, it
used to piss hyd-fluid onto the road,..yet it never felt spongey or
compromised until it ran outa oil of course. Soundz like the master-cyl is
the first port of call.
A hyd system which gets better with 'pumping' means theres air in the system

Seal leaking internally is your first suspect.
Rekit slave & master for peace of mind. Bleed the system and Bob's your
Auntie. More nasty option is internal corrosion that's so bad the pits are
deeper than the seal lip will cover. Then you'd need a new cylinder, so
hopefully not!
Cheers
