I am 73 and taking the plunge to build a PC. It is something I have always wanted to do, as I hate not knowing how something works.
I have read a lot about it and I am not stupid.
I think it would be very interesting and satisfying.
I am obviously lacking a bit in confidence and would like to be able to obtain assistence locally if I encounter a problem I cannot solve. Possibly in the Bios configuration.
Contact me directly if there is anyone out there.

Not being in WA I can't offer personalised help, but I will offer lots of encouragement.
Putting a computer together these days is not at all difficult and I think you'll find that the default BIOS settings are usually good enough to get the machine running within acceptable tolerances.
My advice is to go slow, building up from a simple setup of just motherboard, Video card (if needed) and harddisk firstly. Make sure your operating system is running as it should before expanding the system beyond the basics.
Of course if you need any advice there's a lot of people here who're happy to oblige.
Cache Ya,
Craig.

Thanks people for the advice and encouragement.
I am quite excited. It has given me a new interest.
Just picking the parts on the internet is fun.
I have an old P3 computer..not this one... I am going to format the 10G hard drive and do a clean install of windows, for practice.
Smelly. I love your tag.

There are tons of "build your own PC" step by step guides on the net. Have a read through some of these for a bit of preliminary guidance:
http://www.hardwarecentral.com/hardwarecentral/tutorials/109/1/
http://www.pcmech.com/byopc/
http://www.daileyint.com/build/
http://www.buildeasypc.com/
As has been said, it's not all that hard really. Most things only fit in one slot, it's not like you have 20 holes the same shape and have to know the right one to choose. Good luck with it. :)

Don't hesitate either to post any questions you might have. There are plenty of people like myself here who would more than happy to answer anything at all we could help you with.

Hi Biggles, I am from Mandurah also.
If you encounter any problems that need in-person assistance, then I have a friend who runs his own IT business in Mandurah by doing house calls. If you need his assistance at all, then just PM me and I can give you his details :)

Thanks Moonlightz.
I have replaced the hard drive and done a clean install of XP on an old computer, so I am feeling pretty confident, now I have taken the plunge.
It was very easy.:)
