View Full Version : How about Car DivX Player ?
Hello,
I am looking to buy a car divx player in some nearest future to keep my daughter busy during long trips. It seems that there are no certified divx players at the moment. However, there are few car DVD players which have in-built (sometimes optional) mpeg-4 decoder. Can anyone clarify a meaning of this ? How can it be optional ? I thought that the main processor should be (or be not) DivX capable and you can't change it by some little modifications. The most impressive unit I found on Ebay was this one

This little thing can do everything according to its description. However, its DivX capabilities is the main question. The seller told me that it plays DivX fine. However, often they don't understand what they are really saying.
Any ideas on the main processor brand used in such players ?

Certification costs money and this is a reasonably small market at the moment so you will only see mpeg4 support listed, the better units use MTK chipsets just like the popular home players, there are some cheaper units around that are using less capable solutions but most are going with MTK, I have tested a few and the results were pretty good actually, even DivX 6 was supported
To be honest I dont' care much about certification. However, I would definitely
buy the player with MTK chipset instead of ESS. Could you point to any
particular models or directions for search ? A support of DivX 6 sounds really good.

The models that I have tried have not been released yet, may be available soon though, I can post back once available if you like.

I'm not sure about buts, but I'd definitely be interested in the heads up on a good car Divx setup.
In a few months I'll be finished the actual car, and be moving onto interior. a Divx/LCD setup will play a big part in this. Preferably an all-in-one-din setup for the player/DVD/cd/MP3 etc, as 260z's wern't too accomadating in the din department.
I've already decided to invent some kind of sliding glovebox LCD setup.

That's exactly what it was, with motorised screen also, it's in Bendigo at the moment.

Bendigo's no good to me, I'm still not driving for another 8 months. :p
a motorised screen would be ok for the time being I suppose, but I plan to take the car on a long trip (touring aust.) in a year or two, and so was looking to a larger screen.
Any video output?

Any video output?
Yes they have video output to run auxillary screens also.

hey
was at StrathFields a few months ago & they had a XMS in dash dvd player
that stated "Divx certified" on the faceplate was cheap from memory around $200+.
hope that helps ...:)
Finally I bought a car in-dash mp4 player. I ordered it from Canada and a total cost was around $160 Aus. It is called Innovatek DVD-389 and I am quite satisfied with its performance, it does play mp3,dvd, Divx 3,4,5, Xvid, no qpel, of course. I think it is definitely not mediatek chipset, capabilities are about the same as xms888. SMART menu looks almost identical to xms888. So probably ESS. It even has the same problem that OSD time is on by default and I can't switch it off. It is got only composite out, but it looks fine on 8" LCD TV with 640x480 lines.
What I am wondering now is how to reach "region" menu to have a look at firmware version and region number (if any).
Is it chipset-dependent or each manufacturer invents its own way to do that even for the same chip ?
I tried it using few procedures described here for different players, none of them worked. In addition, when you press "Eject" button player cuts off the videosignal and switches to Radio mode.
