ok, ive had pay tv, austar on and off over 4-5 years
now i love austar, but this last year or so I think the quality of shows
isnt there ..
I mean , tv reapeats the same seasons of fraizer, sienfeild etc and dukes,
ateam
pluss all the adds, all the ads on the music channells
Sometimes i really love it , sometimes i really hate it and think of just
watching fta
but there are a few shows i do watch and i know id miss. shows like
call for help, rides, the ateam, dukes of hazzard, a few other shows here
and there
any thoughts? I love austar but sometimes im not sure

I dumped Austar when the pirate cards were stopped.
I was ok with paying the basic 50 odd dollars per month for all the
channels, but no way was it worth any more than that.

Really, only you can answer that for your situation.

I think a lot of us feel like that sometimes. I do think that the standard
of programming has dropped since we got it around 5 or so years ago.

However, what is the alternative? The choices on FTA are just not there.

At least if you have pay tv, you have more channels to choose from to try
and find something that you can watch.

I wouldn't not have pay tv. Sure there are times when nothing appeals to
me, but if I only had FTA tv to choose from, there would be many more times
when there was nothing to watch!!!

I agree with everything you are saying MILO but what alternative is there.
FTA .... I don't think so.
Really depends on how much TV you watch.
Last night for example CSI had adverts every 4 to 6 minutes.
How long would you put up with that.

depends how much tv you want to watch and what you want to watch. a lot
might appeal to you but if you can only watch a couple hours worth each
night it may not be worth it. or maybe just one thing appeals to you like
the sports coverage, which you might consider worth it just for that. so
it's entirely up to you as an individual - how much tv you watch and what
you want to watch.

look milo, i really think you should drop austar
there's much more in life than pay-tv. look at all
the money you have spent over the years.
your not happy with pay-tv so tell them to pick it up.
and go back to free-to-air. my views good luck.

No way would I pay to watch adverts and continuous repeats that have
long since gone from FTA. To get rid of all the adds on FTA, I
just record on a DVD recorder, all the programs that I want to watch -
even if I am home at the time. That way, I can fast forward all the
advert breaks in about 5 seconds. I can now watch '60 minutes' in
less than 40 minutes.

This is how to beat the gross intrusion of advertising into both FTA
and pay TV - just record everything and fast forward the ads.

And yet when the pirate cards were stopped:

1. The number of commercials increased.
2. The "quality" of the programming decreased.
3. The price went up.

One would think that the opposite would be reality, (if you believe the
Austar Foxtel spindoctors) now that more people are actually paying for it.

I think Pay TV is worth it for the following reasons:

I like AFL and fta in my area only shows one live match per week. Pay TV has at least 3 live matches (except during the finals).

All the reality TV programs (an oxymoron if I have ever heard one) on fta.

Programs I like constantly being taken off and moved to different time slots of fta (usually to make way for more reality TV programs). The programs on Pay TV usually remain at the same time/s each week.

Adverts during movies on fta.

I realize there are a lot of repeats on Pay TV but then I think of how often I have started watching a fta program halfway through it and then wished I could have seen it from the beginning. Pay TV gives me this option.

It's called real life....

For those of you new to this concept, Real life has inspired such Channels
as Discovery, Lifestyle and Shows such as The Great Outdoors.

Its cheap and easy to subscribe to real life. And the "channels" available
are endless. All you have to do to subscribe is turn off the TV.

is it worth the money? well sometimes yes sometimes no. sometimes one or two great programs a month that i wouldnt otherwise have been able to see make the cost worthwhile. other months theres nothing on that interests me and i wonder why i bother subscribing. still one thing i can say, without foxtel theres are literally hundreds of programs i wouldnt have been able to get otherwise so overall i think its worth the money but that as a rule paytv here is still way too limited and over-expensive for what you get. and yes there are way too many repeats.

as for the comment about ads, anyone see that proactiv solution infocommerical on channel v last night? wtf? at first i thought i was watching tvsn or something but it was frigging v with an infocommercial. total crap!

Talking about infomercials. I needed to tape Return to Lonesome Dove
(Hallmark) on Sunday, and thought I would need two 4-hour tapes (it went for
7 hours). Turns out I really only need two 3 hour tapes. The last half
hour of the two 3.5 hour time slots, was a Time-Life advertisement for
country music.

The 4400 was on for a month and a half - where is the rest of season 2 on fta? What happened to the rest of Joan of Arcadia on fta? Two episodes of Haunted and now it has vanished. Etc, etc.

They still blame piracy, and there really isn't any.
