Picked up my new Sonata today. For reasons why I chose it, go back a few
weeks and see my post. This is about what it's like, not why.

Vehicle is a Sonata NF V6, fairly stock apart from 16" by 7" alloys - it is
not an Elite. Spent time with sales person who gave me a run down on the
car. It was presented well, but they had overlooked the 5th alloy, it still
had a steel spare. Was told it would be exchanged at its first service -
well, we shall see. Otherwise, no faults I could detect with new vehicle and
I was fairly thorough. Apart from noticing the glove box light did not work
and sales person went into a flap and ran off to get a mechanic. Mechanic
quietly informed him that glovebox light only goes on when pakers/headlights
are on. Egg on face time for sales rep. BTW, he just had been given a
comparo sheet for the Mitsu 380, but a bit academic for me as I had already
signed on the dotted line. Though I was suprised to find the new Mitsu donk
is still an iron block.

In city (Newcastle) traffic it felt quiet and punchy, with 173kw compared to
the s/c VT's 171kw - different torque figures of course - but the steering
felt a little dead. More turns than on my old Commy VT S-pack, and less road
feel through the wheel. Not totally moribund, but a little dead. Apart from
that, ride was firm and felt settled. I drove an Accord, it felt spongy by
comparison. Probably a little behind the Accord Euro. Body is firm with no
rattles. Son kept saying "Gawd its fn quiet!". Felt settled on the road
through some of Newcastles more famous suburban bends.

Wife freaked out when I got home about the interior trim, she thought it far
too light (its a light grey) and would be a mark magnet. I told her the only
other colour cloth trim is a light beige, and she went kinda glum. Otherwise
she was happy with the passengers seat (she doesnt drive. Doesnt drink
either. :-( ) and settings. Took it over George Booth Drive to Kurri,
without seriously booting it and it felt good. No torque steer I could pick.
No complaints with brakes either, but wait until its run in and it can be
tested a little more aggressively. The CD player plays MP3's as well, my son
managed to fit Wagners Ring of the Niebelung onto one CD (thats 16 hours of
music, folks) and it handled it no probs. Sound is lackin a little in bass,
but if I want to play the Saint-Saens Organ Symphony No 3, I'll buy a sub
and have it fitted.

Boot is huge, has no C hinges to chew up space, unlike my old VT. Rear seat
seems comfy, who cares.

I'll publish a fuller review down the track a little after its run in, if
anybody wants one.

Nice report, the Sonata should have been included in this months Wheels
test of the mid-size-sedans which the Mazda 6 romped home with.Perhaps
it did not cost enough for them?

No RWD and no LPG, so not for me:-)

Keep us up to date with it, faults, economy, quality etc

PS Remember the best day of a new car is the 1st day and the last day,
the rest is just filling so to speak!

Speaking of the 1st day, always take plenty of photos immediately when you
pick up the car. It'll never look better than that, and when it comes time
to sell it, use those photos. They'll look alot better than any you take
say, 5 years down the track.

the sonata is pretty good actually but it still falls down on

I can't understand why interiors are most shit. More cars than not have shit
interior colours. surely it isn't that hard to just use dark grey? All those
light grey's and beiges always look crap.

I thought it compulsory for all teetotallers to drive ;)

fully utilised.

I am really sorry to hear about your Getz, man. Hopefully you'll soon be
able to save up enough for a real car.

Yeah, did that. George Booth Drive runs past Mt Sugarloaf
transmitter/lookout, so son grabbed his Pentax when we went. Took the VT
there on its Day One too.

No need - I'll ask mine for him. He's probably got enough spare change in
his pocket to buy a few Getzs LOL.
