The Magna is dead and Mitsubishi hopes the "grey cardigan" image has gone
with it.
"Although the car is based on the American PS41, Mitsubishi Motors
Australia Limited president and CEO Tom Phillips said it was much more
than a right-hand conversion project."
"It has been 70 per cent re-engineered and redesigned," he said.
Some of the 2000 changes included a full-size spare which required a
deeper boot well, reconfigured crash protection and even a gas strut on
the bonnet.
Mitsubishi invested heavily in its production, spending $250 million to
upgrade its Adelaide plant."
That seems to be an excessive amount of money, just to convert a Yanky
car to RHD??

By the look of the specs and reports, the cardigan stays :-)
Only a 5 speed?? They are behind the eightball already.

"The absence of a six-speed manual – the company does not have access
to one – is not really an issue."
" The five-speed auto produces sharp and smooth shifts, reflective of
the flexibility found in the more expensive top-end boxes."
"The first thing that hits you about the 380 is how balanced the car
feels. On the open road and freeway, on secondary roads or through
those tight and twisty turns, the 380 has a poise about it, a
composure lacking in some large cars."
"A car that delivers all the space, comfort and power of a large car
but combines that with the sporty good looks and handling of a small,
sportier car. That is the positioning of the new 380, a unique place."
Thanks Ron, well balanced article.

Good first appraisal,..the mid 15 second ET is pretty good.
A lot of people don't want a 6 speed manual,..5 are enough to play with.

Indeed. Especially when you bring out a 6 speed manual with top so
ridiculously high that it's practically unusable except for Nullabour Plain
trips. A 5 speed auto is much more attractive to buyers, especially at
fleet level which I imagine is a major target for the new 380 given it's
marketing image and pricetag.

this gear is useful for fwy travel when you have a flexible torque
band (eg v8) to reduce fuel consumption, it does wonders for holden's
hwy consumption figures

FUll sized spare. Why did car makers ever fit anything different.

you need :)

I want space, and I do not want a tall car.
Cross mitsubishi off my list. That only leaves Holden and Ford.
Does anyone else think it is a bit ridiculous that Toyota has a wagon in
their small car (Corolla), but deleted it from the Camry, and never offered
it in the Avalon?
