With 200million people ? Not even close internationally.
JL
(competitions against yourself don't count - like the "world" series)

280 Million actually. Some of my favourite sportscar drivers are Americans,
but they are as well known in the US as an American rugby player might be.
I wouldn't call the US "The most successful motor racing nation, per capita, in
modern history" by any stretch of the imagination because though my country
isn't number one in that category either, we are 1/10th the size of the USA.
Which obviously means that for every DWC like Jacques Villey, the US needs 10
just to keep up the pace! :)

I'd be with Knobdoodle's guess - Finland would have to be the per capita
champs in international motorsport - multiple WRC plus a lot of bike and
F1 success against a population of 5million.
Other contenders would probably be New Zealand (4m) Australia (20m but
quite a number of world champs in most disciplines), Sweden maybe (9m).
Spain (40m) Italy(60m) and UK (60m) have had a lot of winners so they
might rank, but I doubt France (given the Jacques V comment above) is
likely to do that well, the number of French motorsport champs that I
can think of is pretty sparse, and I doubt the US would rank per capita,
despite some great champs the large population is going to make it
pretty hard for them to have it.
On the other hand it also depends heavily on what motorsports you
include - whatever they call that version of speedway that they do on
ice is obviously going to be dominated by East Europe and scandinavians,
F1 being European is European dominated, Indy being Yankee, is American
dominated etc

I always get pissed off at the Swedes and the Finns. But that's because they
share a familiarity with Ice Hockey. Referring to a sport in North America to
a Canadian as "Yankee" is kind of like accusing Keke Rosberg as being Swedish
when prefers to be called a Finn.
Yes, we all know that Keke was born in Sweden. And North America insn't all
"Yankee" either. Ask any Canuck.

Unlike Alain Prost and Jean Alesi (as well as Christian Sarron, Olivier
Jacque and a host of two wheel champions),
the Villeneuves were/are Canadian.

Hmm apologies to the canucks then, not a follower of the 4 wheelers.
JL
(and yeah there's been a few damn good french riders but they didn't
garner many world championships which was the original thread)

Ermm yeah sorry I apologise for the insult but that wasn't how I meant
it - I meant as in F1 is run out of Europe (Spain or Italy ?) and Indy
is run out of the US -I know there are rounds outside of USA (they have
one round in Oz and several others in the rest of the Americas as I
understand)
