This was in todays paper, an answer from the 4WD owners of "Ascot" in
Brisbane. (Equivilent to the likes of Toorak, etc)

WELL, WE DON'T CARE . . .

MARY-ANN Cattner says she knows people hate four-wheel-drive ve hicles,
but she doesn't care.
With three young children and their friends to drive around, the extra
space and feel ing of safety are import ant to her.
Ms Cattner, 32, from Ascot in Brisbane, was driving her husband's top-of-
the- range Toyota Land Cruiser when The Sunday Mail spoke to her, but she
has her own Mercedes ML 4WD.
``I had a 4WD before that and will definitely get them again,'' she said.
``I like being high up and they are quite trendy.'' Ms Cattner says the
ris ing price of fuel is not an issue. ``I really don't care about the
cost,'' she said.
And asked about the effect of 4WDs on the environment, she said: ``It
doesn't really cross my mind at the mo ment. I didn't think it would be
any worse than any other car.''
Import-export business owner David Pullman, also of Ascot, admits he's
carrying a few extra kilos, but he wouldn't describe himself as obese and
he's not happy with the Aus tralia Institute's profile of large 4WD
owners in the city.
``I don't know why they don't just leave everyone alone. If people have
the money to buy one, it should be a per sonal choice. Everyone has their
own reasons for having a 4WD.'' He says he doesn't take his Ford Explorer
off-road, but uses it to tow his boat and to carry stock for the
business.
Like the ``typical'' large 4WD owner identified by the profile, he enjoys
outdoor activities _ horse riding, sailing, tennis and hiking.
Mr Pullman says homosexuals are ``all right if they leave me alone'',
says he is ``pretty neutral'' about indigen ous culture and thinks
government help for un employed people ``de pends on if they want to find
work''.
