Pioneer Plasma Setup

I know that it has been discussed a thousand times before but I'm having trouble getting a definative answer...so I'm going to ask it again.

I just recently purchased a PIONEER PDP-435HDG HD PLASMA. The following connection are available: (REFER TO ATTACHMENT FOR DIAGRAM)


2X COMPONENT (Y, Pb, Pr) or S-VIDEO
1X SVIDEO/RCA
1X HDMI

I own a FOXTEL PACE CABLE STU, ONKYO DVD PLAYER, LG 5100P HD STB (NO HDMI OUT).

Connect the Component output from your DVD player to one of the Component
inputs on your display.
You may need to configure your DVD player to utilise the Component output
jacks - check your handbook.

Connect the Component output from your LG HD STB to the other Component
input on your display.
Once again check the STB handbook for details on how to go about going this.

Connect the S-Video output from your Foxtel decoder to the S-Video input on
your display. You will have to alter the setting for video output on your
Foxtel decoder to do this unless the install tech has already configured it
to use the S-Video output capability and of course get a SCART to S-Video
lead to do this with (not normally supplied with the decoder). There is one
small problem though. If you only have a standard video recorder with only
Composite video connectors (single yellow sockets) and you still record from
Foxtel you should not enable the decoder to use S-video output. Setting the
Pace decoder video output to S-Video disables the normal Composite video
output. If this is the case you will need to use the Composite (single RCA)
yellow connector on your display to view and playback Foxtel programs
recorded on your video.

What Alan says, except instead of using the component for the LG STB, get a
DVI to HDMI cable which should give a better picture.

Also, hook up the FOXTEL STU via a scart to component cable (change the output in the settings menu).

May very well be the case even though Pace's specs don't imply this
capability. I don't know the latest on these boxes as I don't have Foxtel
and haven't had much to do with it since the early digital roll out. All I
do recall is the initial installations only used the composite output even
though the box at the time could do both composite and S-Video. I guess the
burning question would be - "would it make any difference using component?"
given the pic quality on Foxtel is pretty ordinary anyway.

Component on fox digital looks about 40% better than s-video with the right display. I just installed a samsung 61 inch rear projection dlp using a scart to component convertor looks great. You can grab these plugs from most electrical retailers, but i'd grab one off ebay for a cheaper price.

While that all sounds good, I don't have that input structure. Take another look at the diagram of the back of the media box...

Input 2 AV Input, S-Video Input
Input 3 AV Input, S-Video Input, Y' Pb' Pr' Input, HDMI input
Input 4 (Front) AV Input, S-Video Input
PC (Front) D-sub 15 Input, Stereo Mini Jack (Audio)

Given that input 3 component is shared with hdmi, I would drop the foxtel
back to s-video on input 2

ie
FOXTEL - s-video input 2
HD STB - DVI to HDMI input 3
DVD - COMPONENT input 1

This pretty much matches the quality of source material.

Gwavz, that is probably what I'm going to go with. Accept, I'm not going to spring for a DVI to HDMI just yet, unless someone can recommend where I can get a resonably priced one? (are they backwards compatible...http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/4344f41e0bd3ff6e2740c0a87f9c0743/Product/View/C1785). I'll go:
