An interesting article relating to the region-coding article for
computer games. I'm not sure how relevant it is for the DVD market,
but I thought it made interesting reading.

It was argued under the old laws. since the FTA came into effect copyright
has gone the wasy of the manufacturers.

The price of computer games may fall following a landmark court ruling
that allows Australians to buy cheap computer games overseas and play
them on modified TV game consoles.

The High Court ruled today that it was legal to "mod-chip" Sony
PlayStation game consoles so as to play games sold outside Australia.

Mod-chips are electronic devices that can be connected to consoles such
as the PlayStation, allowing the use of games with non-Australian
regional codes.

The consumer watchdog has argued in the Federal Court that the games
industry unfairly uses regional coding to set different prices in
different parts of the world.

Sydney businessman Eddy Stevens had fought a four-year legal battle
against Sony, which claimed mod-chipping breached its copyright and
circumvented technology within the PlayStation console to prevent the
use of what it called unauthorised games.

In 2001, Mr Stevens sold unauthorised copies of PlayStation games Croc
2, Medi Evil, Motor Races World Tour and Porsche 2000. He also sold
mod-chips and installed them on PlayStation consoles.

A lawyer for Mr Stevens said today: "All six judges of the High Court
held that widely-used 'mod-chips' were legal, with far-reaching
implications for the manufacturers of computer games [Sony, Nintendo and
Microsoft] and consumers.

"Mod-chips allow gamers to ignore manufacturers' regional coding systems
and purchase cheaper games designed for markets outside Australia."

The High Court found playing a computer program on a PlayStation did not
involve reproducing it, so copyright law was not breached.

Mod chips only have one real purpose, and that is copied games can be
used to play on a modded console.

Sony should have argued that point and for the mod chips to be
modified to play other region games only, and to remove to coding from
the mod chip that allows copying of games to also be played on the
modded consoles.

It was a much simpler task to whack a hard drive into the beast and copy any
games directly onto that, no mod chip required and games loaded faster

I imagine that had something to do with them bringing out the new slimmer
version.

Nope - not true. Certainly it is ONE purpose, but another is for those
people who, in this global age of the internet, decide to buy games or
movies from overseas. I refuse, for example, to have a DVD player that
is not multi-regioned, as my collection of DVDs is about equal parts
regions 1, 2, and 4.

I recently bought a Sony PSP, and while the games are not region-coded
(allegedly - I haven't yet tried) the movies ARE. Won't be long though
before the latest firmware upgrade is cracked to allow playing of games
from the Memory Stick, and the UMD drive to play all-region movies.
Currently, it is possible to donwload or rip a DVD to DivX or XviD, and
convert it to PSP format using PSPVideo9 software (free) and load it
onto the Memory Stick - works fine ;)

bullshit, pete. Mine is modded and I do not have any pirated games or DVDs. I
have american and japanese games that never got released here...

And those cock rags at Sony are to blame, making it harder to actually
legitimately play multi region games than pirated (eg, you can get an external
mod to play pirate games from anywhere, but need hardware modification to play
authentic games from another region)

Not bullshit at all. The main purpose for mod chips is pirating.
Of course it can be blocked by the people making mod chips but no one
would buy the chips would they.

The net is full of games to download for modded consoles.
If mod chips didn't exist these pirate sites would not exist for
console games.

How can installating a mod-chip to pirating?

If that the case, i cant wait for the car manufacturer start suing any tom,
dick or harry (especially those teenages) for pirating their cars because
they replaced the stereo, added tvs, videos, or dvd etc.. to their cars.

At least the good news is that Sony can't appeal this one :)

To think of all the time and money they've spent on this case for how
far it's got them is simply ridiculous. They would have been better
putting the money into a 'buy DVDs for poor peoples fund..

Sony should have argued that they would remove
their illegal R of T region encoding and make
the PS region free!

Region encoding has only one real purpose
and that is to gouge the consumer as
much as possible.

Without a mod chip it is impossible to play a copied game on a
console.

If you own a console with a mod chip and a dvd burner then you can
copy rented games or download them at will, burn them off and they
will run on the console. This can only happen with consoles with mod
chips.

Are you on drugs as that statement makes no sense at all amd has
absolutely nothing to do with mod chips. You are either trolling or
are to new to understand about mod chips.

So you are telling me that you own a mod chip with not one single
copied game. Yeah, right!

There are thousands of pirate down load sites for those with mod
chips. My point is a valid one. Why don't the maker sof mod chips only
make it region free then. Why do they go the extra distance and make
it possible to play COPIED games. Reason, because hardly anyone would
buy the mod chip to begin with.

The main purpose of mod-chip is to enable you to play other original region
games as well.

if people want to play pirate game with it, it's their choice.

To work for Sony you have to recite their logo "We help dreamers

Sony employee :)
