Just picked up the R4 release of Twin Peaks FWWM. Have only had a
chance to watfch a couple minutes of the disc but I can honestly say
I'm impressed by the transfer.
I only hope this means that the rest of the TV series will be getting
a release sometime soon.
Cheers
Joe

Likewise - it's an absolutely stunning transfer. And a nice surprise was
that while the back of the case only states "Dolby Digital" and EzyDVD's
site suggests it's only 2.0, the disc in fact offers full 5.1 surround audio
in both Dolby Digital and DTS!

The booklet provided is also, for a change, actually worth reading -
exceptionally well done and very large.

Oh, and unlike the US release from New Line, this one's got chapter stops
(58 of them!) and actual extras (in the form of a raw 19-minute 1992
electronic press kit containing featurette, clips, interviews and a
trailer). The animated menus are well done, the chapter-select screen is
totally in Lynch's headspace (you'll see what I mean :) and there's even an
identify-the-character section for the confused :-)

An absolute bargain at $15.98 at JB HiFi (beware, some stores have it at
$18.99 but since it's in their current catalogue for the lower price, be
sure and insist on not being overcharged).

is the featurette good? i've got the R1, but am a big fan, and'll slap
down the cash pronto if its worth it. ta.

anything is an improvement over the english release, which to be frank had a shitty (ie washed out, dull) transfer compared to the US version. reading the specs, though, it almost sounds like a repackages release of the R1. are the special features actually different, or are they the same? it almost sounds worth getting just for the booklet. it'd be great if someone would post a comparison to dvdcompare.net

i noted with interest looking at the case that it's been released in R4 by the MK2 people (who are the people who own the rights to the long, long missing and even longer sought scenes from this film... that gave me the idea that they'd finally released it, and here of all places(!).. but i've heard no mention of that anywhere.

It's quite literally a raw EPK from "back in the day" - and as such, the
featurette (about 7 minutes or so) is pure spoiler-laden advertorial. Still,
it's interesting from a historical point of view to see how such a
difficult-to-sell movie was marketed at the time.

Oh, and correcting my earlier post, the R1 (which I've viewed but do not
own) does indeed have chapter stops and an extra in the form of a 30 minute
documentary, both of which weren't apparent to me when I was sat down to
watch the thing a couple of years ago :-)

For the price, this R4 version is totally worth it. There's a collector's
booklet with it too, and it's cool. The extras are effectively worth it, but
widescreen, 5.1, DTS, who cares about the extras? come on kids, if you're
considering buying this dvd, is there anything that you'd learn from any
type of extra? besides, I'm sure David Lynch would prefer it this way....
he'll rarely, if ever, put a great deal of extras on his films, it will
influence the way you think about the film and that's not why he makes
movies.

Laura had secrets ........

No shit, just buy it, for the 130 min running time, you'll rarely find a
better way to spend $20.

I own the R1, and now the R4. I'm impressed that they went to the trouble of finding completely different special features, and making such interesting menus and such a great booklet just for the R4 version, and then charge as little as $15 for it... I'm by no means complaining! I'm only glad to see Lynch's films get a "damn fine" release in R4.

I've never ever seen Twin Peaks, 'tho I'm a huge Mulholland Drive fan.
So is this compulsory viewing?

watch the series, then watch fire walk with me. watching them in the wrong order will spoil it, as you will already know who killed laura palmer. you'll have to find the second series on vhs, or try and get the spanish dvd (which kind of sucks, im lead to believe).

After a little bit of online research, I've established that the Roadshow
R4 edition is a slightly modified, Roadshow-branded version of the French
R2 edition released by MK2 - booklet, menus and all.

This is, of course, not a bad thing!

Maybe one day Lost Highway will get the treatment it richly deserves.

Be nice if they'd finally release S2 of 'Twin Peaks' too.

michaeldvd now says that S2 is "tentatively" due for sale March 2006. I think they originally said March 2005, didnt they?

No, it's not dreadful - but having seen the lavish attention given to the
image quality on the Twin Peaks series 1 box set, the FWWM DVD and of
course Blue Velvet, Lost Highway looks positively drab by comparison. It
also only has 2.0 matrix surround audio, while the original movie audio was
5.1.
