View Full Version : Some opinioins please - cost of second hand lenses

I am about to purchase a camera for a mate of mine who's family aren't
particularly flush with money. He is just a young lad who has been using a
point and shoot digital of mine and I think its time he moved up to a DSLR.
I am a Canon fan but have considered the *ist DSLR for him. This is on the
basis that he wont have much money for lenses and in my view it seems that
from a second hand buying perspective there appears to be lots of high
quality Pentax lenses that will fit the *iST for way less than the
equivalent Canon or Nikon lenses. This is just from viewing the Adelaide
second hand market and the yellow Photographic Trader. What do you all
think?

Agree with you 100%: Pentax is the way to go to start with.
And they have some very good gear as well if the lad
wants to take it further.
Sure, Canon and Nikon have excellent stuff. But it's also
very expensive and probably a total overkill for first timers.

I'd go Nikon, and I am a Canon user, Have you seen the amount of great gear
there is forsale everywhere! Its just ashame their cameras are so not so
good :-)
anyway, a D70 would be a nice starter!
I wish Canon users would start selling their gear...
like the 200 f/1.8L. 24f/3.5L and 90mm TS-E, 500mm f/4LIS it think that
would do it :-) aahh, why not add the 35mm f/1.4L
No seriously, there seem to always, as of lately, to be a lot of quality
Nikon lenses at swapmeets, photographic trader etc...its worth a look
the Pentax is very small, so if the person has big hands it will be a very
uncomfortable camera to use! IMHO
best of luck

Couldn't agree more.
Pentax is as good if not better than any of the entry level dslr's.
It's not until you look at the pro level equipment that C and N are way ahead of the pack.
Sort of on topic...I just listed a Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 for Pentax on Ebay for under AUD $240. You can't buy anything remotely close to that price in C or N mount.

Don't be so sure - I've got quite large hands and find the Pentax's very
comfortable. They feel much more solid than the Canon equivalents, and are
smaller, lighter, and just as well featured as the D70.

Since you asked for opinions...I think you should consider the Minolta 5D if
the cost of decent 2nd-hand lenses is a big concern.
I've been able to get very good lenses (50/1.4, 70-210/4, 35-70/4, 24/1.8
Sigma and my fave 100-200/4.5) for between $30 and $80ea. I'm not sure how
that compares with Pentax AF lenses, but I daresay it's good value.

If anyone is going to grab a KM 5D , make sure it has an Australian w'ty.
Rumours been circulating that this camera might have a defect in its CCD.
[ as now Canon , Fuji and Sony has released service advisories re. CCD on
its products ]

not too sure about that - there are a few killler lenses in the pentax
range, and I've read very few reviews or tests on the Pro pentax lenses..
but one things certain, Nikon and Canon lenses are FAR cheaper than top Pro

It's always made me laugh that - a lens on almost any mount is cheaper than

Thank you for your support and patronage of Sony products.
It has recently come to our attention that a limited number of Sony products
that incorporate an image sensor device, or CCD, manufactured from October
2002 through March 2004 may exhibit the following condition:
When the product is used in camera mode, the LCD panel and/or electronic
viewfinder exhibits either a distorted image or no image.
We have determined that this condition only occurs to a limited number of
units, but may be accelerated if the units are exposed to high temperature
and humidity environment.
In our efforts to ensure customer satisfaction, Sony will offer free out of
warranty repair to the owners of applicable products exhibiting the
above-mentioned condition caused by the image sensor device.
For further information on the applicable products and the repair service,
please click on the following links to the respective product categories:
*Digital Still Camera
*Camcorder
* CLIÉ Handheld Computer (PEG-NZ90/G and PEG-NZ90/H)

To think of it, Nikon D100 should suffer from this problem too ? :O

Hi Justin,
I am surprised to hear that, I don't think I have particular large hands but
I found it and the Canon 3xxD series too small, but I guess it all depends
on what you are used to, I am sure if I didn't have another choice that I
would get used to it and liking it too.
thanks for sharing

Nikon and Canon lenses are FAR cheaper than top Pro Pentax lenses!!
Well if your commparing consumer N and C lenses to Pentax Pro lenses then yes I agree.
I don't think many people here will be putting Pro lenses on entry level dslr's anyway.
cheers,

Why not, this was the bases of good images. You have to change the body
in keeping with technology but good lenses last many times longer.
Its worth the investment to depreciate a good $2500 lens over 10 -15
years than a $2500 camera body over 2 years.
I have expensive lenses which are still performing after 15 years
without problems unlike the modern cheap fantastic plastic ones.

A $2500 body is hardly entry level these days.
But yes I agree and have many very good Pentax primes, (including limiteds), which I use on an entry level body but thats more due to the fact that Pentax don't make a Pro body....yet.
My reference to pro lenses on entry level bodies was aimed at all the newer dslr users who are relatively happy with just the kit lens.

Agree, the 350 is really disgusting in the grip, hard plastic compared to
the nice textured rubber on the Pentax's, and the control placement on the
Canons really needs some work.
