Thinking of buying one of these, particularly interested in the fact it is
HD, as I want a tv thats fairly well futureproofed, so i can hang on to it
for a while. Anyone have any experience with these, or any recommendations
of something better [by which i mainly mean cheaper ;)]. Cheers,

76cm? If you can go a 86cm or save up more and get one of the new HD
Panasonic Plasmas.

If you want future proofing go for one of those, it even has HDMI.

Surely the CRT market will die soon but there's still a few reasons why you'd still consider CRT:

1) Price/performance: In the small screen market (< 100cm) most are still much cheaper & better than equivalent-sized LCD's. Compare what $1,500 - $2k will buy in both markets. If you can match up screen size & performance betwen a CRT & LCD unit the price diff will be signif & has to be justified by slim size & some other minor LCD benefits.

2) Pure perforamnce - those who are obsessive about picture quality still swear by them. Personally I could never justify >$1.5k on a CRT.n (Just bought a demo, HD Phillips on Ebay myself for $650 & only becasue it's a second TV for the kids.)

I bought the 86cm Toshivia instead. its a nice TV. But no DVI or HDMI.
Dont think the Panasonic has these either. So its not realy futre
proofed itsit :p


Then agaqin no 76 or 86cm CRT tv has DVI or HDMi in Australia.

HDMI or DVI on a CRT is pointless. Since CRT's are analogue devices,
whereas LCD, Plasma's are Digital devices. Or that's how I understand
it.

Look a top notch CRT will normally blow any plasma or lcd away, and I
mean a TOP TOP TOP notch one, but the price well.........

Good CRT projectors even from several years ago can still out perform
modern day LCD & DLP projectors,

some companies in the US sell practically hand built crt's for $40k+

Downside is they are big and bulky,

but those who don't car about $$$ and more worried about picture
quality will happily pay it.

I would if I had the money to splurge.

I could not justify buying a shitty standard definition plasma or RP
TV no matter how much it cost.

My 86cm HD TV is great. Only Paid 2800 bucks for in 6 months ago. And
that TV will do me untill SED TVS come out and come down in price and
then ill get a 100 cm + TV.

Once you have seen HD on a CRT. On Free to air and HD movie files your
hooked. Ive seen So called good plasmas and they are shit compared to
my picture.

I love LCD tvs but they are expensive and only have a maxium res of
1280 by 1280 and thats far off the 1920 by 1080 or whatever it is.


Very happy viewing my TV from 3 metres :)

Most Rearpro's i've seen are all HD, all the sony's are, etc.

I don't like LCD's myself, they still have a long way to go, I don't
like the pricing, contrast, and the fact that the panels are a prick to
keep clean and so sensitive. All you need is a little kid to shove a
toy into the panel and you've done damage, I just think they are too
easy to hurt, at work someone accidentaly nicked an LCD lightly leaving
a nice white point where the nick was, another time I accidentally
scraped the screen with the end of a tape measure, leaving a little
mark, whereas plasma screens are glass and not as easy to damage.

Also, i have the space for it on my entertainment unit, so size is not a

I have had one of these for a few months. The main thing I don't like
about it is the time it takes to switch inputs (e.g. if swapping PIP
with main), which is about 4 seconds if component is involved.
Composite and Svideo only take about half as long. I also had some
color bleed when using it with a Topfield PVR via a Cypress
RGB-to-component converter, but it is much better on a direct
component or Svideo connection.

I read they are 2000 bucks now to or round abouts. I paid 2800 for
mine about 6 months ago. I think they want to get rid od em :p

From what you're saying I think you have the same problem I had when I first
got the tv...

Try just pressing the coloured butons on the remote to change the inpus
rather than going via the AV button and then slecting your input.

I have owned this actual 76cm model for about 2 years. The picture is awesome and I am really happy with it. And at the price you can pick them up for now... you'll be very happy. One downside with the 76cm is that it is so good in standard def, and because the screen is quite small, switching to HD really makes very little preceptible difference. Also, when watching HD you are locked in to the 50Hz progressive scan mode, which I find unwatchable as it is very flickery. Most owners keep their set locked into the 75Hz mode which is a great compromise between resolution and refresh rate. I think it has 2 or 3 sets of component inputs, 1 or 2 S-video, and a bunch of composites. 5 inputs channels in total but some of these carry more than one connection type. Some people have commented that it's ugly - I think the opposite. Very nice glass front and slick looking border / control panel ;-)

I do use colored buttons to select the main input. I was actually
thinking more of the time it takes to swap the main picture with the
PIP/PAP/POP. If one or more of the inputs involved is component it
takes about twice as long as when both are composite or svideo.

Nice set.......bought mine yesterday, so still setting up. I paid 1350.00 at JB Hifi, Kedron, Brisbane. Salesman said that they were no longer being produced and that JB bought up the last of the stock. Ticket on the floor model had 1499.00 as their normal price. I bought the last one (supposedly), although they still had the demo on the floor. I only tried Kedron, so still may be available at other locations.
