>From early reports on the new pioneer (this coming from dealers and my
own boss) I hear its not all that its cranked up to be.

Reportedly the Philips & Panasonics shit all over the new Pioneers.

Which doesn't suprise me since the 50PF9966 and the 50TH500A viera both
shit all over the Pioneer 505. At work we've got the 505 sittin right
next to the 50PF9966, both running component off the same HD boxes and
the picture on the Philips is inherently superior.

Of course the newspapers are going to give it a good rap, they always
give new stuff a good rap. They are giving one away as a prize,so they
better give it the thumbs up so people rush out and buy the paper to
enter the comp.

Yes.

Like all mainstream publications they are going to put out favourable
opinions on big brands because if they post negative things they either
a) face a backlash from Pioneer fans who swear by the product or b)
from Pioneer.

Reviews published in mainstream publications should only be taken with
a grain of salt.

I know what my eyes have seen, and seeing a 505 compared to a similar
Philips, same with a 42" philips vs 42" pioneer, the Philips was
overrall superior. I trust my bosses opinion of the Pioneer, he went up
to an official launch in Sydney along wither others, similar opinions
were they aren't that good.

Also just to let you know i'm going to the October 18th launch too, and
I will finally get to see it with my own eyes to make a final
judgement.

But I'm not going in with high expectations.

How would you rate the latest Fujitsu panels up against Pioneer, Philips &
Panasonic?

Thanks in advance.

To be honest I havent seen the new Fujitsu panels to do a comparison,
unfortunately our store doesn't sell Fujitsu. However I have the
impression that the Fujitsu's are a tad overpriced. That said however,
we do sell Hitachi, which shares a joint panel making factory with
Fujitsu. The Hitachi HD's ive seen have been beautiful, their budget
$3999 model is alright, nice sharp HD picture although the picture seem
a little weird, cant get the brightness and contrast right, but it
looks like the unit is faulty, as its shaking very noticeably.

When I worked for Tricky Dicky's we had Fujitsu panels, look they were
great IMHO, but that was going back about 1 a year ago.

If its the same article I read, did not the Pioneer 6th Gen's win some "Best
of Product" award at the Berlin Show. That would tend to suggest
Journalistic opinions were aligned to the Judging panel..

Cheers

At the end of the day, its how good it look to the buyers eyes.

I'll pass a final judgement when I see the new Pioneer.

As for the 505's, etc I wasn't all that impressed.

The "Daily at Dawn" staff were at the Berlin show "courtesy" of Pioneer - If
I was Pioneer I would expect a good review!

To be perfectly honest I've been less than impressed with HD TV displayed on
either plasma or LCD panels. There is significant evidence of dot crawl
around smaller objects in the picture, especially if they are moving (like a
small bird flying across the sky). Is this just a digital artefact or
really a shortcoming of the panel's ability to display the image?
Comments???

Cheers,
Alan

I simply put it down a number of different factors

1. Australia's crap HDTV system, low bitrates and Channel 7 using 576p
for f**ks sake! Now if I were in government I would not have bothered
with multi-casting, data-casting or SD channels and just broadcast a
single high bitrate 1080i channel and or 720p.

2. How are the HD boxes connected up to the displays? you'd be suprised
how many dumbasses in shops just connect up using composite or s-video.
On the same token cheap 'n nasty cabling can also make a difference.
Also some idiots just hook the boxes up, they don't either bother to
set the resolution or aspect ratios. Ie you will sometimes find
clueless sales staff just leaving the boxes on 576i.

3. The digi box itself. Some shops and some people get a plasma and
just stick a cheap $99 SD box to it, most of these boxes only have
composite, some have s-video. I refuse to sell anyone a plasma (even an
SD) with an SD box, as most dont have component, and they only output
576i, true SD plasma's can only display 480p but in my experiences a HD
box looks shitloads better on an SD than an SD box. Remember SD boxes
dont have DVI/HDMI, RGBHV, Component etc. LG have their SD unit with an
integrated HD box, now why is this? ---- next the quality of the STB
can make a difference. Lets say the crappy Palsonic HD boxes versus the
AUSID box.

4. Proper HD material running into a plasma looks great, its when you
feed them crap material thats when problems occur. Cheap 'n nasty DVD
players really come up bad. If your going to invest in a good HDtv get
good componentry going into it, don't go spending $6k on a panel and
then spend $99 on a centrex dvd player, quality isn't going to happen
that way.

If you want to see these things shine a) research and get the best dvd
player you can find, one with HDMI or DVI, it can upscale, etc.

Or build up a HTPC and use the best gear you can find.
