Going to buy a Philips 42" Ambilight Plasma

I've been debating on upgrading from my 1 year old Epson LCD projector,
initially I was going to pay and get a BenQ dlp or a DLP as I was
finding that DLP rainbows didn't bother me visually like I used to,
till I realised that every time I demo'd a DLP for a customer or demo'd
it for myself in the cinema room I noticed that I started feel ill in
the stomach, initially I thought this was a coincidence but
unfortunately it was not the case. Which peeved me off as I had my
heart set on a DLP now.

Problem is my room is just not suited for a SD projector, not at the
distance I am from the screen. But I'd rather wait till I have a proper
home theatre room then i'll stick a projector in it, and in the
meantime go for another option.

I've always loved the Philips Ambilight 42pf9966, when set up right
with upscaling dvd it always put out a beautiful picture, far superior
to the same sized Pioneer model(i've compared them side-by-side with
indentical boxes, cabling and channels). Overrall reviews for it have
been great. I really dig the ambilight feature too.

However they do have an Aus RRP of $49999 now.

How I can get mine now for under $3k which for that money I have no
hesitations getting one.

So anyone actually bought one of these themselves?
any opinions?

I too like this Philips model,and concider it has a very good picture,there should be a new model out soon because all the other mfgrs.have released theirs, and it should be cheaper.
The new PANASONIC is getting rave reviews and can be haggled to $4000 or less,even the 9966 can be bought for about $4,400 or less

I too like the Panasonic 42" but just the price I can get the Philips
for is just too tempting. Price is below normal cost. See in many cases
when companies sell their products to a store, they usually sell one
which'll be used as a demo unit and sell it at a much lower price. Ie
the Epson TW200 cost is $1900, demo unit price is $1498 - big
difference.

The philips roughly costs stores about $3500ex GST. So if your ever
going to haggle one, haggle it because they can sell 'em for $4k and
still make a profit.

I would hold off for six months unless the philips tv supports 1080progressive and supports HDMI. The reason is due to HD-DVD and Blu-ray players will display 1080p and you will only be able to get this quailty through a HDMI. Who knows when these players will start coming out, (they are currently saying March), but once they do you will probably see more TV's providing supporting whats required for HD-DVD and Blu-ray players. Video formats should then settle down for quite a while after that (i hope).

Also forgot to mention that it needs to be HDMI 1.1 or later to get the higher video format. If you are thinking about a new receiver...wait as well... Dolby have also said recently that there new audio format (Tru Dolby HD) will require HDMI 1.3 which hasn't been released yet.

HDMI format on the Philips accepts, 720p & 1080i

New dolby format doesn't really interest me.

I'm getting a 7.1 Channel Sherwood Newcastle Receiver, it'll hook up to
my gear through either fibre optic or coax. I only have 5.1 Speaker
setup for the moment.

the last philips plasma i saw with this feature couldn't be switched to have
the"'ambilight" at a fixed level (which is how backlighting should work),
instead it kept changing according to what was displayed on the screen
....wrong, wrong, wrong !

It can be fixed or dynamic depending on how you set it.

I've never had a problem with any of the instore ones i've tested.

I've just read the new models have stereo ambilight which apparently is
awesome.
