Using 3 SIM in Normal GSM Handset

Has anyone tried using a 3 SIM in a normal gsm handset?

I have an O2 xda ii mini but want to use THREE as my carrier. Not really
interested in video calls etc so happy to be limited to my normal gsm
features (as long as normal gprs is possible).

THREE Customer Service has said no to using it in a gsm phone but I want to
know if it is no due to technical reasons or no due to policy.

Any info/experiences appreciated.

no, they restrict the sim to only work on umts handsets, does work a very
few now old handsets..

plus gprs would be charged at $4 per meg anyway and you would have no access
to three's wap service..

Yes, but they don't allow it, for obvious reasons.

I have used the 3 SIM in a 2G handset when roaming overseas,
and that usually works. Except when the roaming agreement is
only with a 3G network.

Can you use a GSM handset to roam on telstra outside the
3G coverage in OZ ??

Doesnt work in some phones.

No, I live outside 3 service area and put 3 SIM card in my old Nokia
7250i here and it won't accept it.

it seems a little strange, as the new Telstra USIM's (3G sims) work in 2G handsets with out any problems

Maybe the 3G sims are backward compatible. I guess it make sense that 2G
sims wouldn't be forward compatible with phones that didn't exist when the
2G sims were developed.

Bit different for telstra, as they have no roaming agreement with any other carrier in Australia, so they don't need to protect revenue.
