View Full Version : "Just Car" Insurance?

Is this plausible? I just saw the add on TV and have put in a request
for a quote just out of interest for comprehensive, however may very
well consider 3rd party only.
Got reamed back in 1999 by an InsCo I won't mention over an accident
where I was not at fault (taxi driver ran a red light), and have not
been game (more angry) to go near *any* of them since, so I'm a little
(OK a *lot*) paranoid about them, however think it would be a good
thing to have even if I never use it providing the cost is OK, ie: not
over around $500. Not paying $1000 or so a year as back then. and they
kinda look plausible from the add (famous last words).
Aftermarket turbo installed as well which I don't want to get
reamed up the butt for.
Are these folk too good to be true, or actually plausible in the
grand scheme of InsCo "business"?

Try 'all car' insurance as well.
I used Just Car for my Chev powered 4runner. Was only reasonably modified
(Motor, suspention lift and wheels etc) but they took one look and said
yeah, okay no worries, $380 a year fully comp for $8k Value. $350 Excess.
Had to sell the car (Turned out to be a bit of a Lemon) and they gladly
returned the unused portion of my policy no questions.

They are AAMI under another name (just like Australian Pensioners Insurance
and a few others)

Just Car is a branch of AAMI.
AFAIK they specialise in modified cars and I'm not sure that a diesel
4WD turboed or not would fit their idea of a modified car but it won't
cost much to ask.
Are you saying you don't have any insurance at all?
IMO thats a very bad idea if true.

I'm hoping it will cost _nothing_ to ask.

Nope, have had none for 6 years, and am willing to pay
for any damage caused by my vehicle to other property
while I'm driving it.
Some of the stuff I'm seeing on the road makes me wonder
what would happen if someone crashed into me. I maintain
my own vehicle and stand behind my own vehicle maintenance
work and driving ability.
If I don't have some sort of contact with InsCo I'm
wondering if they could actually tell me to get fecked
if one of their comprehensively insured drivers were
at fault (I'd have no way of fighting it). Not that
having a policy with them may or may not help either.
All just a thought ATM, I don't trust any of them.

AAMI bothers me, hence the question (although I do have green slip
with them - still).

Thanks. Sent them an email back saying I'll accept for $380, and to
provide a quote for 3rd party only.

Pretty risky. Doesn't cover for theft or an unavoidable
collision that you're the innocent party but technically
in the wrong.
Even if you're 100% in the right, you'd then have to take the
other party to court to get your money.
I think it would be madness these days to not have at least
3rd party.
Cheers,
Rod.

I have 2 cars insured with AAMI and we have had 2 claims, no hassles
with either claim, one at fault one not at fault.

Thats fine but what about the scenario of your car being hit and badly
damaged whilst parked somewhere, it happened to my brother in law who
was uninsured, his car was a write off and despite locating the at fault
driver he got nothing because the other driver was unemployed and owned
nothing.

Sounds very high to me, I only pay $620 (AAMI) for my 2003 Hilux which
cost me $32,000 10 months ago.
Do you live in a high theft area?

No, I could park my car unlocked on my street for a week without a
problem. Once had some kids come by and check it out for coins.
No way I'm paying $931. They ignored my request for 3rd only, so
I put in another web request for 3rd + f/theft with a comment
"3rd only too". PITA to fill out the site 3 times. Should have
an option to "provide quote for all three options".
My offer of $380 was greeted with:
"For us to Comprehensively insure you vehicle we would require the
full premium as stated in your quote. Unfortunately our premiums
are non-negotiable."
Just got in the quote for:
Premium Amount Third Party Property Damage Only $490
Third Party Property Damage plus Fire and Theft $640
Should I do this, or could do better?
I'm still thinking this is a bit of a wank.
Thanks.

I can't understand why its so high?
Maybe you need to make a phone call to find out, do they understand its
a diesel, people who work for insurance co's are a bit thick so you need
to make them understand its a truck not a sports car.

In all seriousness, you have no insurance "history". The reason why
the quotes are so high is because most of the other people here are
quoting "60% no claim bonus" or "70% no claim bonus" rates. That
means that they get a 60% or 70% discount on the premium (but no
discount on the stamp duty).
You'll probably find that NRMA, GIO, AAMI etc. will insure your turbo
diesel for a lot less. I'd probably try an online quote from AAMI.
Also consider that you may get a discount on CTP if you also have
TPPD or comprehensive insurance with a related co. I get a discount
on the Volvo from AAMI because the car is insured with shannons.
Oh, and you'll also need to sort out the legality of the modifications
before any insurance policy is really worth bothering with.

Whats your feelings on this senario:
Your driving down the main road happy as larry when a guy in a new Lamrogini
(Or insert expensive exotic here) pulls into the lane next to you, plants
boot and quickly pulls into your lane. Realising then that theres a child on
the crossing just in front he hits the picks and his nice Lambo stops on a
dime, you however hadnt had time to slow and increase your stopping distance
and you hit the rear of the Lambo at around 40Kms smashing the rear quite
well. Theres absolutely no witnessess and the guy jumps out holding his
neck.
Whats would be your plan having no insurance?
Lets say for arguments sake that the damage bill is $10k..
Would you just slam the Hilux into Low range and drive over the prick or
what?

I ran into the back of a 2 day old Lancer VR4 in 1992 or thereabouts
when I was distracted for a second.
NRMA bought the owner a brand new car, cost me $250.00 excess.

$10k might buy a new bumper bar and a couple of tail lights on your exotic.
Lets say for realistic arguments sake that the bill is $50k.
Which is the reason I've got 3rd party property on my motor bike, even
though it's only worth a couple or thousand. IMHO 3PP should be compulsory
on all vehicles.

Have you tried Shannons? My car which the regular insurance companies
wouldn't touch, and Just Cars had a ridiculous quote for, only costs me

That's a rather arrogant attitude isn't it? What if the other guy wasn't
