Car giants back ethanol-blended petrol
October 19, 2005 - 6:22AM
The car industry has thrown its weight behind ethanol-blended petrol.
Carmakers will tell drivers from next year that petrol blended with 10
per cent ethanol, known as E10, is safe for vehicles and will not affect
warranties.
The message will be placed on every petrol-cap flap from January, it was
reported today.
The backflip follows a series of meetings between cabinet ministers and
the chief executives of Ford, Holden, Toyota and Mitsubishi.
Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane said he would urge international
carmakers to consider using E10 labelling for cars imported into
Australia.

I have no doubt that once ethanol takes off, there'll be a few petrol
companies who don't put any of the stuff into their premium fuels.
Regular unleaded petrol will drop a few cents with E10, making the gap
between high end premium petrols (Optimax, Synergy 8000, Ultimate 98
etc) even bigger, anywhere up to 20c more at the pump.
The price of E10 petrol will gradually creep up to the same price that
standard unleaded is now, of course, the gap between E10 and premium
will remain at 20c or so. Anyone who finds that their vehicle doesn't
run well on E10 will be forced to purchase more expensive fuel, or
purchase a new car with a warranty that covers ethanol use.
Of course, this won't happen if our PM, with the interests of all
Australians in mind, mandates 10% Ethanol to be compulsory in *all*
petrol, to keep his mates in the Ethanol industry happy. His spin will
be "It won't be compulsory to purchase E10, it will be compulsory to
sell E10." The industry has asked for this to happen at the end of this
financial year. Fun times ahead!
Funny how the PM is going on about more sustainable fuels/transport, yet
Fed GovCo won't allow that little electric car into Australia. Read one
of the few stories in which TT isn't labeling all car enthusiasts as
hoons here:

Will they put another sticker on the vehicle that says "E10 use may
lower your fuel economy"?
I would say that this new sticker is mandatory, imposed by GovCo to help
out their Ethanol producing mates.

Compliance with a Govco directive to accept ethanol, or else, is
hardly tantamount to the industry throwing its weight behind the idea.
It only means they'll patch up your car under warranty if the ethanol
happens to stuff it!

Great! My owners manual says my car can cope with up to E3 so E10 is gonna
force me to consult my mechanic.

it's only the aussie makers who have 'thrown their weight' this way,
not importers. in case you hadn't noticed, nissan packed up and left
some time ago :)
