Just rang up Repco, to get a set of wheel bearings and was told that as they
are a sealed unit, the hub costs $440 each side. Does that sound right?
And any ideas on what most mechanics might charge to do the lot? And is it
something I should be able to do myself?

Hope so. Will give Bursons a ring tomorrow. Rang a couple garages locally
and they all are around that mark. Saying the whole hub has to be replaced
and being ABS and IRS and blah blah blah. Damn I love the Kingswood!

Try a Holden dealer, its possible they are cheaper.

Except you can't. I would ring a Holden dealer for a price, it not unusual
to find that genuine is cheaper on specific items.

Yep, sadly that's what they cost.
I got a set trade-price from Holden, and they were cheaper, but not
cheap at all. The person that got them from me was adamant that the
price I got was the cheapest you'd ever get.
Why are you replacing yours? I replaced mine in a VS that has done 370
thousand Kms, and the originals were still okay. The noise I was
chasing was still there :)
Try a second hand one from a wrecker, they should be okay. Just make
sure the wheel studs aren't mangled like the one a wrecker tried to
give me!
They aren't that hard to change as long as you've got a torque-wrench
and the right allen-key socket. (Is it called an Allen Key socket?)
Just keep in mind that the IRS ones are different to the live rear axle
ones. I think the IRS ones are marked green, and the live are grey.
They have different number of 'teeth' for the ABS sensor.

IIRC the OEM hubs are supplied, as a sealed unit, by one of the major
bearing manufacturers (might be SKF).
It just so happens that bearings have horrendous markups -- the
precise percentages being best not mentioned here.
Might be worth inquiring at a bearing outlet.

Yeah, I tried this too...
It seems that SKF only make them for Holden. Then again, take down the
numbers off the hub and give it a try.
There was also mention of using the non-ABS hubs, which are cheaper,
and swapping across the sensor and the reluctor to them. Good luck with
this. If you can do it without damaging them, I'm impressed!

Well, I had the tyres replace not long ago, but shortly after a noise
appeared. Checked the lug nuts and the wheel weights but are all ok. I'm
actually taking it to a mechanic in the morning to see what he says. I
would hate to shell out $400 each plus installation for it to be something
simple.

Jack up front of car, spin wheel(s) by hand, place other hand on
mudguard (or should I say fender).
If you can't feel the vibrations it isn't likely to be the wheel
bearings.

I would check out your tyres first having replaced all front wheel bearings
on a VP , then found it was the D Le mans tyres
