Vodafone new GPRS rates suck

On $79 post cap, which includes GPRS.

Just analysed last 3 months useage and compared with current usage under the
new "fairer" GPRS rates.

Verdict....Vodafone now suck....

old rate was charged per kb (2 cents)
* great for leaving a GPRS connection open and polling email from phone or
the occasional web surfing.

eg, a mail server check, no new mail...would cost a few cents.


new rate is PER SESSION $1 per 5 min.
By bye long sessions...$12 per hour for a few kilobytes worth..

eg. a mail server check, with no new mail, would cost $1.

The rosey example provided here is uncharacteristic of how GPRS is used and
unrealistic given the actual transfer rates achieved.

Depends on your usage I guess.. I was actually very pleased...

I spend short amounts of time connected but transfer larger amounts of data,
so I can do 10mb in an hour now and now have to pay $200 out of a cap.. as a
result I ditched my unlimited gprs $49 sim and super cap and went to the
mega cap.. no more sim swapping or mucking around and more freedom to use
the shared bundle for voice or data.

If you want realtime email go get a crappy blackberry, or a seperate sim on
a data bundle with a second device.. :)

The point of GPRS was to get away from timed phone calls. Pointless.
Voda's first big mistake.. Love my 3 data plan...

Would go to 3 but don't want to change handsets :(
