View Full Version : Vodafone changing network ID?

During a visit to Sydney over the weekend, I noticed that my old trusty
Ericsson T39 started showing "VFAU" instead of its usual "AUS VFONE" as
the network ID. This has remained even upon returning home to Darwin.

Interestingly enough, a spare phone I have (same brand & model &
firmware version) continues to show the old ID (with the same SIM).

Why would this be? Not that it matters, but I'm curious...

Cheers,

Dee

Vodafone on costcutting drive... think of all the money they save with 50%
less characters.

Then they can pass the savings on to us <mug> punters.

I'm in Sydney as well, and all my SE Phone's have changed the Network ID (as
you call it) to "VFAU". I've contacted a voda rep and they will get back to
me, as they had no straight answer.....

Vodafone is such an international operation that it probably make sense
to standardise. Maybe that's the reason behind the change. With "Aus"
in front, it won't be grouped with the rest of its operation. Maybe,
just maybe.

Well, as I said - the interesting thing is that this particular phone is
still showing "VFAU" even after I returned to Darwin (where I live),
while the same brand/model of phone that did not travel to Sydney is
still happily showing "AUS VFONE" as before - with the same SIM card.

Weird, eh?

I would have thought that, say, for international visitors choosing
which GSM network to roam on upon arrival in Australia, it would be much
easier to see that "VFONE" (or "AUS Vodafone", as the same phone with
the latest firmware says) is actually Vodafone - rather than guessing
that from the new cryptic acronym.

Particularly so as "YES OPTUS" and "Telstra" are pretty self-explanatory.

Who knows. But then in New Zealand, it is "NZ VODA", in South Africa it
is "SA VODA" and so on. So one could assume that having the country
symbol listed up front is a normal thing.

Cheers,

Dee

It would appear that the phone received an OTA (over the air) update while
in Sydney.

Not true. Youve had the software upgraded.
