hi i am new to the forums and was just after a bit of advice as i have recently purchased some spx-11 speakers and am wondering what is a good amplifier to drive them with.
i am wanting to listen to music on them at the moment but later on i may want to be able to use them in a surround sound setup. i went to harvey norman and the guy there recommended the yamaha rxv1500 (au $1400) as it has a 2 channel mode which gives more power to the two main speakers but has the ability to have surround sound later on. what do you guys think of this amp. what about a marrantz sr-7300?
i will consider later on getting jensen rear speakers etc but for the moment i am just after quality for music.
any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
thanks adam

Hi Adam,
I am also new to this area but have had some good recent advice when I
was also waying up between Marantz, Denon and Yamaha.
I have chosen Marantz, Denon came in a close second and when talking to
some of the expierienced I through the Yamaha catalog in the bin.
I think that if you choose marantz or Denon you can't realy go wrong,
both reputable and not priced above Yamaha too far.

yeah thanks for the advice tommy, marrantz does sound like it is a very good choice i am just not really sure what would be the best model to go for in my situation as i want mainly just stereo and 2 channels for music at the moment so i guess the home theatre would be a second priority with quality of sound with music being the first.
thanks again

Marantz are renowned for good 2 channel, and I can vouch for that as
well;-). I have the SR4500, it is incredible sound for the dollars. I
run a Marantz SD4000, Pioneer 676a SACD player and a Harmon Kardon HD750
through mine. It has prompted me to look at new speakers;-).

First off, Forget all about Hardly Normal, the salesman you spoke to,
will be selling washing machines next week. Go to a dedicated audio , Hi Fi
shop, where you can sit in there sound room and hear the different Amp's ,
CD players, etc using different Speakers, they may allow you to take your
Jensons along, and audition them with there Amp's . Also take your own C.D's
These people don't sell washing machines, Toasters, or mobile phones, They
sell Hi Fi gear, and will probable have a selection of stuff, you have
never seen before.. Which will start you rethinking your Hi Fi ideas,
You could also post any questions on here, in the Audio // Home theatre
section of the forum..

hmmm what i am just wondering is would i be better off just getting a 2 channel amp seeing as i am after 2 channels at the moment because with a 7 channel marantz it would seem like a waste to only be useing 2 channels. would i be able to get better sound for a cheaper price if i just went with a 2 channel amp?
can anyone recommend some good 2 channel amps?
thanks heaps for all the replies you guys are giving me some excellent information

Consider the Rotel's good value for money, and nice stuff to boot.
