If your phone supports IrDA or Bluetooth you a better off using one of
them than a cable. My Nokia 6680 came with a cable supplied, but I do
not use it.

I use Bluetooth and when ever I walk into the house my phone
automatically syncs with my computer without me having to do a thing.

Unfortunately, there are Nokias that only have a data cable connection,
such as my 2280. When my son-in-law got one of those DKU clones from
Ebay (and Hong Kong), we could not get it to work with my phone or his
Nokia GSM (don't remember which model). It would not be recognised on
about 5 different PCs running either XP or Win98SE. In the end someone
suggested installing some other driver software, open source stuff I
think it was, and it worked. But I think that it also killed the USB
port, or did something weird to it.

I s'pose that'd be handy, if you're forever changing or editing your
phone's phone book, or if you're using it for taking lots of photos,
maybe.

In my case, I only want something that will make a backup of the phone
book, and allow me to export from my Palm and into the Nokia. It's
amazing how Nokia often regresses with respect to some of the features
that its phones have or used to have. For example, my old 5110i used to
be a ripper as far as connectivity went. I could backup the phone book,
add to it, import csv files into the Nokia Data Suite, as it was called
back then. It would also allow me to send and receive SMSes via the
software, when connected to the phone.

Then when I got the 6385, it too was flexible and it had IR
connectivity. When I drowned it and it died, I found that the 2280
didn't have this. So I couldn't do what I did with the 6385 and that was
to beam contacts from my Palm to the Nokia...

I have found that the genuine Nokia accessories vary in proce so much. For
example, a handsfree earpiece (genuine, same model) costs around $20 at the
Vodafone stores in Centrepoint and Bondi Junction (Sydney), yet the same
device is around $39 in the nearby Vodafone store and Telstra shop in Pitt
Street mall and other city locations.

Or even if you change stuff rarely.

Completely automatic synch makes a lot more sense.

Lie on that 'often' claim.

Lie, it needed a physical cable, stupid.

Bought a cheap DKU2 cable off eBay, lasted 2 weeks before it broke
(connector at the phone end broke), so spent $ on a genuine one and now
working for 6 weeks with no problem.

We use GPRS to the laptop and it only works intermittently when on
Bluetooth or IR but no problems using the cable
