All sarcasm aside, what are the Newer magnas like?

THinking of upgradeing the 626 with a newish Magna. Whats the issues that
the newer ones have. Ive had an older sigma that never let me down (just
leaked/used oil like it was going out of fashion).

Would I be better off spending another $3k and getting a camry of the same
vintage/condition?

Just for a family car and shortish trips around town for the wife N kids

OK, I'll admit, I'm a huge Magna fan.
They are excellent value for money and absolutely totally reliable in
my experience.
Bear in mind that this car was designed in '96 when it was named Car
of the Year and has only had minor upgrades since then compared to
those of its competitors.....they had a new car on the books but Mitsu
worldwide was in trouble and the pin was pulled.

Issues?
There are none providing the car has a good service history with a
reputable service company who knows the vehicle.
I've had a wire come off a rear speaker when the boot was absolutely
stuffed with luggage causing the radio to have it's overload
protection cut in till the problem was traced, and an oil seal on diff
required replacement at less than $100

Suggestions?
Take it to a good wheel aligner and get them to set it up properly
with better settings than factory.
You'll reduce tyre wear, get far better steering and feel, and
sacrifice absolutely nothing other than an almost unnoticeable
increase in tyre noise on the highway.....not enough to require a
radio volume control linked to the speedo like Holden!

(Mitsu was crazy using the alignments that they did)

I've got 2, a '96 TE with over 200k on it and a new Verada AWD, I
traded my 2001 TJ AWD on it.

Honestly you can't go wrong.

Best value for money car of that ilk at the monent is the current Hyundai
Sonata.

I haven't driven one, but they certainly look like they have all the
goodies, and are excellent value for money.

It was only the difference in price that really swung me to the Sonata, over
the Accord Euro and the Mitsu 380. The new 380 is a nice car. But the Sonata
is nice to drive, nice power (and the sequential shift is fun!) and has
given me no troubles at all - but then with less than 2000 on it, it had
better!

Actually I think the current model Sonata is the most un-Hyundai looking car
they've built to date. It kinda reminds be of a cross between an Accord & a
BA Falcon.

Very different to the previous model, which I thought was pretty blah, and
it looks quite nice in the flesh.

The front end makes me want to hurl, it's typical Hyundai.

Oh I was talking about the Magna but with the current Sonata it is a
good looking car actually its one of the best looking Hyundais made
IMHO. The top of the line V6 Elite seems to be the choise of a luxury
mid size car.

It does, and fucking good value buying as well.

If I was in the market for such a car I'd certainly give the 380 a look, but
it would need to be good to beat the Sonata on a value basis. Certainly of
the ones of each I've seen in the flesh the Sonata is a better looking car.

No doubt the Sonato is a pretty decent car but the styling puts me off
completely. I would prefer the Honda Euro (a nice ride) and possibly the 380
though I haven't driven the latter yet.

Yup I think its better looking than the 380 although the 380 is a very
car to drive but over hyped though.

Well, it depends on what you mean by 'newish', I haven't had much to do with
Magnas since our '00 work magna wagons which I didn't really like much
compared to our other Falcon/Commodore wagons. They were mechanically
reliable enough, but had lots of small problems, nasty torque steer and the
aircon couldn't seem to cope with the north qld summer.

Unfortunately we haven't had any camry's as work cars, so I can't give a
direct comparison, but my parents and sister both have a camry which they
have been really happy with. They have had a lot less problems than our
work magnas, but as I said.. not really a fair comparison.

Might want to check up on parts prices too before you make you decision.

Personally I would pay the extra $3k or so and get a camry. If you get the
chance.. take one of each for a drive and see what you prefer.

Interesting, My Magnas have no torque steer, just a little kickback
when traction is lost or going.

I drove my fully loaded (4 adults) from Sydney to Airlie Beach in the
middle of summer with 40+ days and the air coped well...did I mention
that the car was Sable coloured .... yeah, that's black.

Maybe someone should have had the air looked at on your work car.
