As inspired by Noddys post...
Is it just me, or has laughatrice.com, ricecop.com, etc all become less of a
sad social commentary on the lack of taste of a minority of "car
enthusiasts", and more a prediction of future visual trends?
Seeing pics from Autosalon just recently, I suddenly realised that I was
looking at a show celebrating what used to be laughed at as bad taste
several years ago.
Maybe old mate selling his 24" rims is the future trend of Joe Average, and
the Autosalon-esque events of the future will be a collection (what IS the
collective noun of an autosalon competitor?) of something worse. So much
worse that just typing it in text will give such a terrible mental image
that your taste and style portions of the brain will be destroyed before you
reach the end of the description.
A bleak future, the future of the aussie car scene...

Krawler

No it is a car show. History for those who dunno (if anyone cares......)
Tokyo Auto Show, very good, running for years.
The aftermarket shops in Japan started a show to run the week after and
called it "Tokyo Auto Salon" ..... more great Engrish but hey, if you asked
me what Japanese word means "dress up your car" I may come up with something
to do with hairdressing too (Sydney Show of Car-StylePeroxide???)
The aussie versions have lost the plot. Yeah if you like 4's (as I do) it is
OK, but still too riced up. Most of the cars are add on plastic and little
go fast bits. The Tokyo auto salon is *really not rice*. Call that a
contradiction in terms if you will, but the Tokyo (original) version is
about aftermarket tune shops and manufacturers showing off what they can do.
It is all about bettering the other guys.
Yes bodykits and stereos that are a bit over the top.... but big bad HP and
doing it right with serious gearboxes and diffs etc. And full on handling
packages. Drag car HP, but GpA track car handling and some awesome paint
jobs. TRD did a clear coat over bare steel polished Supra for eg.... to be
different.
Some of the 1000hP plus Supra's and RX7's spring to mind. Ausie
version....... Civin with big wing and $20K stereo that the guy didn't even
fit himself. Yeah wow. Give me $20K to spend at a stereo shop, and someone
else fits it, but I win an award.... get real.

A few years ago a mate of mine went to one of these aussie autosalons.
He said some of the car owners had a little podium next to their cars
and "danced" to the "music" on their car stereos and if you got close
and started looking at the car theyd start dancing "at" you as if to
say "yeah? you like my siiik car?"
Funny as hell (in a laughing at them sort of way) but also sad as hell
(in an "oh the humanity" sort of way).

G'day Krawly, glad to see you've returned.
I think you're on the right track.
30 years ago the biggest rims were 14 inch, IINM, now something like the Golf
GTI comes standard with 17 inch rims. Even pov spec cars come with 14 or 15 inch
alloys.

pov spec cars have been coming with 14-15inch alloys for a while now. 17 is
basically standard.

Err. 30 years ago is 1975. Plenty of big american cars, down to about
the size of HQ Holdens (eg Pontiac Trans Am) came standard with 15, but
they were fairly consistently steel wheels even when fitted with foam
moulded fronts ("polycast").

The base models of a lot of cars still come with steelies. My AUII has
16 inch steelies, and will be staying that way.

16 inch is still pretty big and surely mostly for aesthetic reasons.

new car wheel arches are getting so massive that small wheels look out of

I have a peripheral involvement with some auto salon trophy hunters. To say
they are fucking idiots with too much money and major inferiority complexes
is an understatement.

See Kev's other post about a 1964 Galaxie... That'd be a 41yo car...
BTW, FJ Holdens also had 15 inch rims. :-)

The only good reason for big diameter rims is because the brake calipers
won't fit inside smaller rims. One extra inch in diameter beyond the size
that just barely clears the calipers is about the right size IM(NSH)O.
That way, mud, gravel, etc. don't try to jam between the rim and brake.
Anything bigger is a wank, and stupid in the context of the roads around
NSW.

The original reason for increasing wheel diameters was so bigger brakes
can be fitted by now its mostly for show.

I read somewhere that back when the trend towards smaller wheels
started (in the 50s possibly?), the engineers were having fits because
the stylists were asking them to reduce the size of the brakes so they
could fit inside the new wheels!

It arguably can be - the case would be argued along the lines of people
doing it for whatever enjoyment they get out of it (which is why a
number of cars I've owned went like stink, but looked fairly shitful) vs
those who do it solely as a status symbol (and I guess what constitutes
a status symbol in and of itself can be champagne comedy).
Having said that, it's their money, I couldn't give a shit what they do
with it. In fact if anything, it's polarised the public and the police
to the point I can do my own thing with far less attention.
