I was just browsing over at amazon.com and found this link
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BD88YQ/104-5508536-1398308?v=glance&n=130&s=dvd&v=glance
in the states they have a 2 disc version coming out with DTS, in Australia we are getting the normal 5.1 track. Just checked out ezydvd to confirm and I was right, no mention of DTS GRRRRRR!
http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/780291
As anyone who saw this flick at a decent cinema will testify to, the sound of the film was freaking fantastic and seems like such a shame that we wont get DTS. I know 5.1 can be very good if mastered well but I dont understand why we can't get DTS track if the yanks have it.
Anyone else pissed of about this ?

What's DTS?

its true digital sound, there is constant audio information being sent to your 5 individual speakers plus your subwoofer. most movies that 5.1 have sound mostly coming from your front two speakers + sub with isolated parts sending audio to your 2 or 3 surround speakers. dts offers the closest audio experience to being in a cinema.

What's DTS?
This is the exact reason why the majority of australian titles lack DTS.
In know way is this a shot at you alstanwick, but the general public in australia class surround sound as that, surround sound. Why spend the extra $ to transfer a DTS track when the main market won't make the ditinguishable difference between the two (DD5.1 & DTS), and really do not really care?
When australia become more of a home theatre nation, then maybe we'll have more luck.
Oh, and alstanwick, Dts is a sound format, just like Dolby Digital, but with a fuller, richer sound in most cases (in some it makes Fuck all difference. :))

It may not be that people dont know the difference, care for the difference, maybe they just dont have the speaker system capable. Our home speaker system is simply two channels. Left, Right. So I dont even bother checking for 5.1, let alone DTS.

You've just proven my point. Australia is really a nation that has yet to embrace home theatre systems.
Although the majority of people have bought dvd players (pushed along into it by the majority of videostores no longer stocking VHS), they hook them straight to the TV, and leave it at that.
It's also these people who get annoyed because 'the picture isn't filling up the screen' and zoom the picture in so that it does.

"I bought a widescreen TV, and I want to use the full screen" The fact they're watching short fat people totally out of human proportions doesn't matter (4:3 being shown on a 16:9). They say "how do I know we haven't been watching it all wrong for all these years?" The really scary part is that both are serious :(
To add to the insanity, my father prides himself on being an "audiophile" and refuses to buy DVD's that are not at the very LEAST 5.1, but prefers DTS, yet is happy to watch a distorted picture.

Well we plugged the video output into the tv. Although it isnt a widescreen, and we dont distort it so it removes the black bands (I dont think we can) we plug the output audio into the amp, which chugs it out to the two, only two rear speakers. Should our lack of copious amounts of spare money to spend on flashy audio equipment be held responsible for the lack of DTS sounds on dvd? Maybe if you say yes i could convince the parents to buy some new speakers.

Why have you made this personal? Read my post clearly, I didn't have a go at you have not having the spare cash for a home theatre setup (or even for not having one), I was merely explaining australians are still slow to take up the technology, whatever the reason being.
Just for the record though, seeing as you brought it up, it dsoesn't take a great deal of money to put together a DTS setup (albeit a pretty average sounding one)
Hell, with the proper DVD player to start with you can listen to DTS for less than $80.

Hell, with the proper DVD player to start with you can listen to DTS for less than $80.For 4 (inc centre and subby (the .1 in 5.1) ) more speakers, and a DTS amp or decoder? $80.00? Where, hot? It must be good for that money. :pirate:
If you only have 2 speakers groggy, then you won't be getting DTS anyway. Usually the amp will work out if you have the right number of speakers and if not, drops back to stereo. IF you "trick" the amp into thinking you have the 6 speakers required for DTS it will send the sound to all 6 channels, resulting in sound only coming from the two you do have, and all other signals are lost to non existant speakers.

Oh, ye of little knowledge. :p
Like I said, with the right dvd player to start with (shop around and look at what your buying, these are under $100).
Get a player to decode both DD and DTS, then just buy a cheap set of 5.1 speakers with the 6 channel input. Because the DVD player has already decoded the signal, a decoder in the setup isn't required, and the 5.1 speaker packages are plentiful for around the price I mentioned.

:)My dear, dear Linton it matters not if the DVD itself decodes DTS or DD, the fact is you still need an amplifier (for the speakers to plug into) that can handle the decoded DTS signal in order to play them back.

You're in over your head biggy.
The majority of 5.1 channel speaker packages (not the ones built for amps your obviously thinking of) have 5.1 direct inputs on the back of the sub.
While this is no good if you're not inputing a decoded signal, with DVD players decoding the signal onboard, it will output via 6 cables, straight into the 6 inputs on the back of the sub.
The sub will then send the signal straight to the speakers already dictated.
These speaker packages are nice and cheap due to the lack of decoding in them.

:rolling:What's the sub connected to? I contend you still need an AMP - wherever it's located, in the DVD player, decoder or wherever. If the AMP can't handle DTS, you won't get DTS simple  I'm aware of the type of sub you're refering to, but unless the sub has a built in DTS decoder and amp, as Clint Eastwood once said, "you're sh*t out of luck"

The sub does have the amp, powering (usually) 5 satilites and itself.
As long as the signal is decoded anywhere along the chain, it will output it to it's 6 channels.
Hence a DVD player decodes the DTS, outputs it via it's 5.1 ch output, to the 5.1 ch input on the sub, sub powers it to it's speakers.
It's not exactly rocket sience. It was exactly how my first ever setup was run, A wintal player, decoding both DD and DTS, outputed to a (not so cheap back then) F&D 5.1 set of speakers.
The speakers has volume, base, and treble controls, which is where the amp you speak of came from.
Create a new thread in the home theatre section and let everyone else tell you as well.

Science would be the word you're looking for I'm tipping Linton  Read what I said sunshine, there must be an AMP in there SOMEWHERE that handles 5.1. If that AMP is in the sub, then that would classify as SOMEWHERE would it not? Or are we getting too deep for you?

Picking up on a typo? That's just petty, even for you.
I hav e not changed the setup from word go, your the one that had trouble grasping the idea and technology, otherwise this topic could of been over 5 posts ago.
To prevent you from any more Unnecessary typing, I've going and picked the first link I could find for you.
http://www.strathfield.com.au/Products.asp?CatID=129
See the diagram on top, see the speaker package directly below?
Works exactly the same when the player outputs a decoded DTS stream.
Can I assume you've grasped the idea now?

Oooooohh cut me.
Linton, you surprise me. Are you REALLY that slow a learner? The diagram CLEARLY shows the DVD->AMP->Advertised speaker package.
Come on mate you're either missing the point or can't read  Look again

Hmm, obviously I rushed the link a little quick.
I'm splitting the thread from war of the worlds and posting this section in the home thatre forum.

Edit - I got the point, the slow comeback editted in wasn't really required. :rolling:
