dont know but if it gets harder to start and the starter slows you got
it wrong .

the timing will affect the idle speed
if you move it into advance the revs will rise, if you retard it the
revs will drop,
or you could just lift the distributor cap and get someone to turn the
engine on the started, watch which way the rotor button spins
once you know this, then the timing will be
turn the same direction as the rotor button spins - retard
turn the oposite direction as the rotor button spins - advance
this will give you an idea as to which way to move it
then you want to retard the timing just a bit, only a couple of degrees
then take it for a spin(you need to drive it to hear if the engine is
still pinging
it's a bodgy way to do it but it works until you can get it done
properly

If its suddenly started pinging without you adjusting anything, prehaps a
trip to a mechanic is worthwhile? Randomly fiddling with the dizzy (BTW, a
cheap timing light thats gonna work at least once is all of what, 20 bucks?)
is hardly a good idea :D

Since it's EFI you shouldn't fuck around with the distributor, rather fix
the actual problem.
Does the ping go away on premium fuel?
