I know I risk being seen like some sort of grim reaper of this NG, but
Richard Burns, the plucky Brit who won the WRC in 2001 has just died. He
was only 34 FFS!
I kinda follow the WRC, & I remember some story about him having 'an
episode' behind the wheel during a rally a few years ago, but he sure
seems to have slipped under the radar since. Apparently it wasn't quick
either.
Poor bugger.

Rally Driver Richard Burns, 2001 World Champion, Dies (Update1)

Nov. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Richard Burns, the 2001 world rally champion,
has died two years after being diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor,
a statement on his Web site said. He was 34.

``Richard knew the odds were heavily against him and yet he fought his
illness with bravery and good humor,'' it said.

After having undergone chemotherapy and radiotherapy Burns was able to
leave the hospital in the summer of 2004. His health showed signs of
improvement but after six months it worsened. Burns slipped into a
coma in recent days, the statement said.

Burns was the first Englishman to win the world rally championship
four years ago when he was with the Subaru team. He then raced for
Peugeot before being unable to compete in 2004.

Doctors conducted tests on Burns after he fainted at the wheel of his
car on Nov. 2, 2003, four days before the season-ending rally in
Wales. He withdrew from the race, ending his chances of his second
title.
