Yeah..or use a Customer Relationship Managment application (CRM),
I would use a custom application but why re-invent the wheel.
There are lots of Free CRM & ERP applications, some of the best run on
PHP & MYSQL which simply means you will need a small server.
There are also lots of Free Point of Sale (POS) programs,I was
supprised to see the local supermarket here using a Free Open Source
POS system, disapointed to the fact that it was a contract installation
possibly at a very high cost.
http://www.compiere.org/
was reaping lots of attention a few months back.
I recall opencrm to be very nice and easy to use,and has lots of
features,
see http://sourceforge.net/projects/openrcm
It is very easy to customise as it is written in PHP with MYSQL data
base
For a full list see
http://sourceforge.net/search/?words=crm&type_of_search=soft
If you are looking for just a desktop application be warned, there is
not alot available for free, and ones that are,are either lacking
features or incomplete where ever you look.
Web based or browser based is much better any way.computer crash you
don't loose your information.

Reynolds & Reynolds are probably the most prevailent, but it's mostly DOS
based & so fucking counter-intuitive! If you're looking for something to
use front-of-house, for tracking of clients/prospects etc,
'salesassistant' is very good and web based so you can access it anywhere.
Also ERAnet for the same use, but done by R & R again so still a bit dark
ages.
Don't know how to get in contact with R & R but if you email me (remove
'keepitcar') with specific requirements I may be able to help with some
contacts.

I've written one in the past. Contact me on 041 717 9741 and we might be
able to work something out. There is always Reynolds and Reynolds as an off
the shelf package but don't expect much change out of $100k.

Most of these applications simply equate to a customised CRM,it is
highly likey that many of these app's are based on opensource CRM's
especially http://www.compiere.org more so latter productions,I would
certainly be doing so serious research into these programs,to check
that they are 1. not based on opensource code that is available for
free 2. that they have as many features as a basic CRM.
Somone mentioned 100k I would have expected less possibly tallied on a
per sale basis or total number of stock for commercial app's,for 100k
you can pay your own software engineer for a whole year,in some cases
pay three for a year.
It would be way cheaper to have a standard CRM customised in PHP than
bye a commercial app. at this cost...lol.
There are shit loads of PHP developers looking for work.
I would be watching who truns up to meetings at
http://melbourne.ug.php.net/
Good Luck

PHP is a pissy little scripting language with inbuilt performance and
security issues.
