Not something I have mad a study of,..but the other day I got pulled over by
what looked like a Ralliart Magna only in light metallic blue, not black
which is the only colour I've noticed others.
I was pulled over because my 8 by 4 trailer lights were not working. This I
thought was OK as long as the car's lights were visible,....not so with the
'95 Camry, they were not quite totaly visible and I accept that. No fine, so
it was out with the cash to upgrade to flat 7 pin socket on car and plugs on
boat and box trailer.
Other unmarked cars here in the sunny west of NSW also include a white XR8
which looks like it was ultra lowered,..some 2" at least by my reckoning.
Apart from the sight of a walloper in a blue shirt as driver, which was
obvious from the side from about 30 metres or less, the rest of the time
these guys are pretty well hidden.

What sort of registration plates did the car have. Did you take down the
number, that could be usefull to know. It is probably best not to
overtake an unmarked police car.

I've seen a few that you couldn't pick. Surfer looking guy in a wagon,
stickers and mags. Small, cheap van type vehicle that would pull over a car
then another unmarked car would appear and join in. That sort of stuff. I
often spot them by the aggressive or odd driving.

Guess they dont involved in chases...
Been discussed before no doubt,..but as youngster I remember the wry jokes
about the Vic Police buying a couple of Daimler V8 sports cars to chase the
snow-ski brigade in their Porsches etc in the '60s.

They had the Daimler SP250s in Canberra. I know a guy who used to drive one.
The problem here was, at that time, there was no "cross border" pursuit, so
if you were travelling Sydney to Snow (or vice-versa) and could beat the cop
car to the border, he had to give up the chase and you were home free.
Until they got something that had a bit of grunt, the cops were not a chance
of getting anyone in a performance car. My friend has a host of stories
about some of the guys they did catch with the SP250s.

I remember my father getting done between Armidale and Gyra about 1970
on a mountain stretch of the the New England highway and there was this
lil black mini buzzing along at the speed limit, the old man slips
around him on a short straight and next thing there is a flashing blue
light coming from within the mini......DOH
wouldn't have been much that could lose a mini through some of those old
twisty bits

They often have these stealth cars doing the NSW snow road run too. You'd
never spot them, until they capture someone. Scruffy stickers on the back
windows, things on teh roof... you name it.

Two coppers chasing a young hoon down towards Tweed Heads Qld , when all of
a sudden the first car when over the border and the copper yanks on his
brakes, the passenger cop asked why the sudden halt to the chase and the
driver cop said, "Well we will never catch him now hes an hour ahead of us!"

There was a Kia Carnivale in Albury about a year ago. I've spotted a few
Magnas including a verada wagon too.

Flashback to 1985, Port Drive Fishermans Island, bunch of hoons parked
beside the road doing ...errr....nuffin, along comes a light metallic
blue turbo VL with 15 inch steelies, pulls up in front of everyone and
drops a huge smokey burnout, then stops about 20 metres up the road and
waits. You see the newbies itching to get inn their cars and give these
guys a run and being told by those who know better to just stay put.
after 10 minutes the VL speeds off. 10 minutes after that the place is
deserted
Not that I would know anything about it

Interesting car. The original SP 250s were produced just as Jaguar took the
Daimler over. According to this site (URL below) Jag found the SPs chassis
and body stiffness pathetic. Doors even opened!! during hi-G cornering,..so
Jaguar redesigned the car's in that area. The re-designed ones were later in
the '60s circa 1962-64. I guess the Ozzy cops got these ones.
The engine is also interesting: a bitsa design 90 deg V8 using 2 SUs and
hemi chambers, it produced only 142 bhp and 155 ft/Ibs torque,..but the
weight saved the day at just under a tonne
see http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/frame.php?file=car.php&carnum=2404
for the whole story. They also were manual,...no doubt this would present an
extra training fortnight for current flat-footers (duck!)

In Sydney, it used to be, if I recall correctly, a road called 'Brick-pit"
or similar? Anyone remember. It was the unofficial drag strip back
aways,..nice and long with no sidestreets of any traffic, with a
brick-factory at the end. Off P'matta rd IIRC.

Yeah, this Magna could have been a stock 3.5L. Keeps the budget in tune, and
can handle non-performance cars like the Camry 2.2,...
