View Full Version : That 60 second burst

The speed limiters on trucks thread brought up the topic of the "60 second
burst" to complete and overtake. Saw it in action on Saturday.
Heading down to Bunyan (near Cooma) on the Monaro Highway, just crossed out
of the ACT into NSW. I'm doing just on 100 indicated in the Subi with a
trailer on the back, a guy in a Volvo S40 comes up behind at a reasonable
pace, probably cruising about 110, gives a burst to overtake me, I guess he
would have gone past at about 120, then drops back to probably 110. Then
there is a quick flash of the brake lights as he comes back a bit more.
Then, just up the road, we are going past a truck pull in spot, there is a
HWP car and two coppers, one with the laser gun in hand. As the Volvo goes
past him, the copper with the gun gives him a good hard look and a stern
waggle of the finger (from side to side - not up and down!).
I reckon the Volvo must have been right on the copper's tolerance level with
the gun, and the fact that he slowed down after the overtake probably saved
him. One lucky guy. Needless to say he was right on the 100 mark for some
time.
And nice to see the copper with a good sense of judgement.

What is the law on overtaking speed? Are you technically limited to the
speed limit?

AFAIK yes, so if you want to legally pass that police car that's doing
98km/h on the Pacific Hwy, you're going to be on the wrong side of the
road for quite a long time ... Cheers

Hrmm.
I regularly go up to about 60+ km/h over the "limit" (hi OzOne) when
overtaking.
I might need to take more care in future. (Increased penalty avoision, not
increased *safety*)

Dont they have to get two takes and then lock it in? If so his second one
may have been the 105 or so that he locked and and thought better of going
through the drama to book ya for that.

I thought they allowed 10% tolerance in NSW?

It was a laser unit, they have a very discrete narrow "beam" and I expect he
would have been targetting one car only. Plus the fact that, with it being a
two lane road, it would have been pretty clear which was the faster car -
the Volvo was doing the overtake and finished up in front of me so there
would be no doubt that the reading belonged to him.

My understanding is NSW HWP practice is to give 10 +3km/h. That would tally
pretty well with my own observations of either myself or other cars not
getting pulled up when doing around 10% over the posted limit.
And I'd say the Volvo was pretty much on that sort of speed when he pulled
back in and settled to his own "cruise" speed. Though in the overtaking
manoeuvre he would have been doing closer to 120 (my estimate) which is
probably why he got the "finger waggle".

Asked one of the Police who used to post here (spooky) He said that such
things were looked apon with a reasoned view,.meaning if you go over the
limit, provided its not "unreasonable" looking procedure,.the fuzz wont do
anything. I think we all do that ie go to 115 or 120 to o/take a semi doing
the limit, but which slows down on hills.

FWIW, I got two of these on a trip Brisbane -> Cooktown :)
The first was a cop in a car coming the other way, speedo said somewhere a
whisker above 110kph in a 100kph zone so probably just within reason, so I
got a flash of the high beams and a stern finger waggling :P
The second was a bike with a radar, and he gave me the waggle without even
using the radar (was tucked under his arm at the time)... Possibly noticed
the over take of 2 cars on a downhill stretch and figured I was "probably" a
fair way over the limit :P

they don't have to allow any tolerance at all
when I went to Victoria a few years ago, I returned to Sydney via the
Princes Hwy(stayed at Tathra for 3 days) about 1/2 hour before the
border I came upon a car that looked suspiciously like an unmarked
Police car, the side mounted radar unit gave it away, I even pointed it
out the the wife, my speedo was reading a tad under 100 and I was
gaining on the police car and passed it as we arrived at an overtaking
lane.
Then I get the blue lights flashing so i pull over, first thing the
copper says to me, you picked us from some distance back didn't you?
I said yes, so he asks why I passed him while he was conducting mobile
radar. I answered that my speedo was reading 100 and the speed
difference between us wasn't great so i saw no reason to stay behind, he
asked me if I was listening on the scanner, not having country Vic
Police freqs I wasn't(not that there is anything illegal about doing
so). they breathalised me, mentioned the mudflaps and flares not
properley covering the tyres(4runner) though they said I had at least
attempted to do it but they could still book me if they wanted to. Asked
me where I was heading, I said outta this place, then they bid me a good
day, just as they went to leave I asked what my actual speed was, he
said about 102-103
then they followed me for 20 mins at 103kph(100 on my speedo)

They pulled you over for 3 over the limit?
Pick the most insulting deletable expletive, because that best describes them.
I've passed fully marked cars at about 105 (indicated and GPS confirmed) on my
speedo and they haven't bothered me. Sounds like those cops were really bored
that day and were hoping you had something they could ping you for.
