View Full Version : sound drop-out at start of show

I have a TEAC HD STB and I've noticed when watching SBS that the sound
drops out for a second at the start of the show. For instance, the
Terrorism documentary on Tuesday night, the show started with the
introduction by that old bloke - can't remember his name - and then the
moment the actual doco started there was a one second drop-out, several
seconds into the doco.
This has happened on every doco I've watched on SBS (like the ones
about Einstein). I don't know about other programs as I don't watch
much on there.
Is this an SBS digital problem or could it be my STB?

Sounds like the same problem I had with a Pioneer dvd player.
The problem was with loosing a few seconds audio at the beginning of each
track of a dvd. That I found was associated with amplifier I was using
(marantz SR5200). Connected via optical cable for digital audio. I've since
upgraded my amplifier to a different model and have not had any problems
since. Even though the dvd player is connected exactly the same way to the
new amp.
So i'm guessing your problem is the amplifier you are using more than the
Set Top Box. You can test the set top box by connecting rca audio cables to
the amplifier and see if you still get the problem.

Thanks for the reply. I pump the sound from the outputs on the STB
directly to the TV though.

I didn't watch this docco until last night and on my recording of it it did
it too. I think SBS may be at issue here to be honest. There have been
several occasions historically and of late with my Strong (and other) box
where not only does the sound blank but also the picture. It was very bad at
the during the Aus. vs. Uraguay soccer, and it happens frequently on In
Siberia Tonight.
It seems to me like the upstream chain at SBS gets out of sync, or even the
muxer itself, and this causes these drop outs. The ABC in Sydney has been
doing similar things on occasion, but I believe they are shifting the
transmitter site from Gore Hill to Artarmon and back again while they
complete upgrading works.

my STB has a similar problem. At the beginning of any show on SBS, a couple
of seconds into the show the picture and sound drop out completely for about
a second - almost without fail at the beginning of any program on SBS but
doesn't happen at all from any other channel. I figured it was an SBS
issue.
