Here in Sydney I've never seen anyone take a shortcut through a petrol
station. It's good. Must be some large fines etc? Or do they actually teach
SAFETY in driver's ed here?

Some servos put chains up to stop it happening. At others, I have been very tempted, but so far I
have resisted.

What's unsafe about it? Or is this one of those 'I hate it when someone else
gets away with things that I'm too scared to try'?

Whats illegal about it? Someone point me to the website that specifically
states its illegal.

Actually, traffic signal intervals here are cleverly timed so as to
discourage such pastimes.
(Really - I see absolutely no other sign of reason in light intervals
save that one)
The trick is to set the signals to allow no benefit from rat-running
the servo on the corner ;-)

Ahh, so if the internet says it's ok, it must be right.

Happens all the time at the Mobil on Bold St and Parra Rd in Granville.
Mind you, I don't think the two guys in the white van and the Civic who
drove into each other trying to simultaneously exit in parallel (on an
adequately wide driveway) about 2 months thought it saved them much time
.... Cheers

No fines, and no, there ain't no safety instructions in getting a license.
I've watched hundreds do it, and have done it myself when there's a saving
of a few minutes sitting at lights.
More people cut through when there are no lights nearby, esp in shopping
complexes - avoid the speed humps.

I first time I saw someone do it,at a set of lights, which seem to take
upto 4mins to change,I decided that was a fantasic idea,I would never
do it,I drive the only 68 Mazda that still exists so to speak with the
worse paint job I have ever seen...lol
Seems we have some aus.cars readers that have no life if you get my
drift....toot toot!....toot toot!...beep beep!
Could not be seen doing this.

It comes under the same heading as "just having fun", I have seen it happen
in Brisbane a car cut through a servo and didn't see the teenager as he
stepped out of his car, missed the kid but had to swerve and hit a car
waiting to fill up. May only happen one time in a thousand but if you don't
do it ( cut through) that is it's one less time it can happen.

Stupid people will always do stupid things.
To expect that all people behave like the stupid minority is foolish.

Absolutly fucking stupid and dangerous
having been almost hit many times over the years by fuckwits tearing
through the servo to beat the lights(mostly to find that if they had
stayed on the road they would have been better off as they now have to
wait for all those cars that were in front of them to pass the servo's
exit before they can get back on the road) even late at night. I block
the driveway if the servo is closed or block off most of the driveway if
the servo is opened so that any impatient fuckwits will have to wait for
cars filling before they can get through
I have seen people driving through servos and almost hitting people
walking to their cars, I have seen a few minor dings and for what, a
minute of time or less
BTW you are on private property and having an accident when you had no
business being there could cause some major dramas for you
Servos are dangerous enough places as it is without some braindead
fuckwit racing through to miss the lights

Arabic would only help for some of the population. It seems that everyone
there can read numerals though, so school zones have a 40Km/h limit 24/7 &
speed bump speeds must *never* be exceeded in *anything* except (private
buses - if you can find one these days).
Still and all, Granville feels a lot safer than the F3, especially in the
hols .... Cheers
