Why do people put new Australian plates over the top of foreign plates for
privately imported cars? The old plates are usually held on with screws
too so it's not like they're hard to remove. Is it a case of 'look at me
in my imported car you plebs'. Particularly funny when it's a car that is
otherwise readily available here but have just taken the cheaper (as in
future value) option. Oddly though, it is just about always UK plates and
never, say, Japanese plates.
Bet their fog lights get a workout too ; p

I've seen plenty of Euro plates under standard NSW plates.
Seems to be the drivers' country of origin, have never seen it on an
'import' but have seen it on a few older cars, and once on a spankers BMW
330ci.

A big part of it is that the UK laws say that the plates must remain on the
vehicle for the life of the vehicle. Removing them would contravene UK law.
For some reason, people seem to think that removing them in AU might be an
issue. It isn't, of course.

It seems that they get a workout on just about every car that has them. My
Falcon is an exception.

Your reply is OK but quoted lines tend to be a bit odd. See above. Is it
just me?

Ahahaha. Having once looked (briefly) at importing a
less-than-three-year-old car that I owned while working in Europe I'm
pretty sure that the import duty on that would have been entertaining to
say the least!
