Someone has been selling Panasonic HD STBs on Ebay recently. I was bidding on them myself but was
outbid.
All of a sudden the listings have gone. Looks like it was a scam
Was anyone here stung?

Nope, but I already have one and it's a piece of junk.
You're lucky the listings disappeared before you got stuck with one.

Do a google search on Panasonic STB and you will find they have had a LOT of
trouble with them.
Also lots of discussion on the DBA forum.

Unfortunately I discovered this too late.

So do 1000's of others, Neil has a bee in his bonnet because he got
railroaded into keeping his faulty unit that he stuffed it by adding some
hack switch it.

Excuse me but the kill switch was added after 18 months, no less than five
supposed warranty repairs and a replacement unit.
You would have a bee in your bonnet too.
Read the DBA forums if you think my case is unusual.
Maybe the newer models are better but I'm not about to find out.
We recently bought a couple of $69 SD boxes for the other TV's and they work
perfectly.
So much for the $900 Panny.
If you've been following any other threads you'll know that I've been
generous in my praise of our Panasonic HD TV so I have no problem with some
Panasonic equipment, just their HD boxes and their after sales service which
they euphemistically call customer care.
I just call it as I see it.

Neil is right. You are VERY lucky then...
They are really re-badge low quality Sonics selling for much less at
JB Hi-Fi if you did research.

After the 3rd warranty repair I would have personally visited the CEO of
Panasonic and stuck it deep within him.
Why on earth didn't you insist on them swapping it for a brand new unit
or got your money back?

The most incredible thing is that I didn't want it in the first place but
had problems with the screen geometry of the TV and Panasonic refused to
even look at it unless I was using one of their STB's.
So I exchanged the original STB for a Panasonic ($350 extra) and that's when
the fun started.
They replaced the first one after three repairs then after two repairs on
the replacement they supposedly tested it thoroughly in Sydney and sent it
back, saying it tested fine.
Yeah, right!
When I told them it was the same as before they told me it must be my
aerial, connections, cables, environment, signal strength, attitude or all of
the above.
Telling them it was the same in three separate locations didn't seem to sink
in so in the end I gave up and installed a hard off switch in the case,
keeping in mind that it had been off the road for about six months of the
eighteen months I'd had it.
We now just kill it every night and power it up the next day and it works
fine.
So much for the aerial, connections, cables, environment, signal strength,
attitude or all of the above.
Panasonic STB's suck and so does their after sales service.

Not sure of the later models but mine (QTR 2140 from memory) was a rebadged
something or other, definately not made by Panasonic.

My HD STB is a Panasonic TU-HDT104A model which i bought at the same time as
a 127cm plasma screen, DVD recorder and home theatre system. All items are
badged Panasonic and i recall paying about $450 for the HD STB, which was
about the same price as other HD boxes. This was last September.
I think that the STB is *not* a Panasonic item because you can't use the
universal remote control supplied with the home theatre system to control
the STB. I contacted Panasonic about this and they confirmed that the STB
cannot be programmed nor operated by their own universal remote. So my
conclusion is that their STB is, in fact, a rebadged generic box made by
some other company.
I still stick with my earlier comment that the STB works fine.

I have physically compared the units. They sit side by side at most
JB stores. Pana 2140 = SoniqDVB24
I wish idiots know something before they rubbish themselves:
