Why is it that some foxtel digital channels allow you to stretch the screen
to get rid of the black bars on the sides of the screen and other channels
dont do it.

Example, I stretch Nickelodeon out no problems but when I turn to Foxsports
or CI channel it doesnt happen with programs that aren;t widescreen.

Because Fox sports & CI are broadcast in WIDESCREEN (16:9) and Nickelodeon
isn't.

FYI:

The correct term that describes a picture with horizontal (top and bottom of
the picture) black bars is: Letterboxing

The correct term that describes a picture with vertical (sides of the
picture) black bars is: Pillarboxing

As to the specifics of your question....

Ill take it one step further then, why do shows broadcast in widescreen on
foxtel fill the entire screen then and not have the pillarbox effect like
you can have on high definition set top boxes?

Are you talking widescreen images viewed on a 4x3 display? Or widescreen
images viewed on a 16x9 display?

In other words tell us what type of display you have as the answers can vary
depending on the aspect of your TV.

Foxtel does not own all of the channels it broadcasts and different channels
and different shows on those channels broadcast in different aspect ratios.
The only setting that remains relatively constant is 4:3 centre cut. For
16:9 television you can select 14:9, stretch or pillar box.... you can not
just sit and leave these but have to keep modifying depending on what you
watch.

Also you might want to check your box settings.
Your Foxtel box needs to be set to the proper screen type (16:9 or 4:3)
so it defaults appropriately.
