View Full Version : Protected Content, PVR Won't record on Win TV
I thought I would post this hoping that someone else knows whats going on.
Recently on Win TV Digital at Orange NSW I have had problems with my Panasonic HDD/DVD recorder refusing to record prime-time type of shows only when on Win Digital.
The PVR will record for up to 2 mins then it comes up with the protected content warning box and says it is not allowed to record this programme as it is protected content.
I have only ever seen this before on Austar with Box Office, now it looks like Win are trialling it for free-to-air to stop people recording the shows.
Has anyone else noticed this, or know how to stop it? One of those "video stabilizer" boxes perhaps?

It's really odd and have never happened before, just seemed to start after new years and is only happening on WIN. I was taping Malcolm In The Middle tonight to test it and it took 50 mins to happen, but on last Thursday night it would happen every 2-3 mins.

Sure its not a screwy recorder?
I've never heard of FTAs protecting their content, and it seems very odd
that of all the stations in the world, WIN Orange would have the
money/resources to do such a thing.

Did you notice that Win digital was off the air for 24hrs last week.
I think it was the Tuesday 27th Dec
But ordinary Win was ok.

Yeah I did notice that, it went off on New Years Eve about 330pm and didn't
come back until the 2nd at about 5'ish I think. Stuffed up watching the fireworks that's for sure.
It's funny but I am wondering if this problem has something to do with that
outage, I never noticed these problems before.. Although at this stage you
are now the 2nd person from Orange who has replied and it seems to be only
me with the recording problem..

I've never heard of FTAs protecting their content, and it seems very odd

That's why I'm asking around, so I can try to see first of all if anyone else
has noticed this sort of thing.
Apparently it's part of the DVBA standards though and doesn't require any
special resource to protect the content, kind of like switching on an option in
their software. So my worry is that they are using Orange as a guinnea pig to
test the results and then may spread this sort of thing to capital cities..
Of course I may just be paranoid and have a nasty faulty set top box too..

I had the same trouble a few months back with my Panasonic E-85 when it was connected to the STB via the SCART connector.
I changed the connection to the S-Video input and it has not happened again.

Oh ok, thanks.
If it's still happening during this week, I'll change it over next
weekend and see what happens.
