Hi all,
As the subject line asks: what's the long term (up to 200,000kms)
reliability of Mazda MPVs like? They're another type of vehicle I'm
considering for the electric wheelchair transport I mentioned in my
previous post.

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

Which version the older RWD V6 model or the later FWD version with the alloy
engine?
Personally, the older RWD version was very well built and had a rudimentary
load sensing "ABS" on the rear wheels only. The old 3.0L V6 is quite nice if
maintained (regular oil changes) but isn't a powerhouse [it caught up with a
"hot" Gemini that did a hit run on the back of the MPV]. It's drivetrain was
a heavy duty version of the "luxo" 929s of the era. By comparison the FWD
version comes across as a cost cutting exercise to get Tarago buyers.
For wheelchair use, both back row seats could be easily removed. The
mounting points should be sufficient for any specialised equipment needed.
Rear aircon is a bonus (controls above rear left side window) given that
only the front doors have operable windows. Body is nice and wide, a lift
shouldn't be overly difficult to add.
My parents have had one since new 1996 (IIRC) and it's holding up quite well
to younger kids and rather limited maintenance it gets. Fuel economy is not
brilliant but it's OK when you factor in the weight of the car etc (IIRC
about 14L/100K standard family hack commuting. Standard fold up wheelchair
squeezes into the cargo area behind the rear most seat...
Lovely car for eating up the K's very comfortable for the driver and front
passenger.

would the MPV have enough headroom for someone in a wheelchair, I mean
real headroom, at least 6 inches

Don't know what price range you are looking at, but for reliability I would
have a look at a VW Transporter diesel T4
